Luis Madero tests positive for COVID-19

Giant infielder Luis Madero has tested positive for COVID-19, as Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic was one of those he covered on Twitter. He consented to the disclosure of medical information.

Madero, 23, was claimed and rejected in the days before the spring training coronavirus. That familiar surprise tactic has worked for the Giants since Farhan Zaidi came to town, though it is expected to be used less frequently in 2020.

The Giants previously revealed that the outfielder Hunter Bishop had tested positive too. It would have been part of the 60-man player group. Otherwise, Madero is the only player who was identified as infected when reporting on the launch of the Summer Camp.

Fortunately, there is no indication at this time that Madero is dealing with particularly troubling symptoms. You will need both to physically recover and record two negative tests before you can return to the activities of 60 men.

Madero likely didn’t have a real shot at winning a major league gig, but he could surely be a candidate for a major league shot sometime this season if he performs well. At times he seemed like a legitimate MLB prospect, but he’s also had some difficulties. One of them came last year at Double-A, where he worked for a 5.72 ERA with 7.5 K / 9 and 2.4 BB / 9 in 89 2/3 innings.
