If we look at figures, what we are, then it is safe to say so Light seems to have a really viable Tesla competitor on its hands with its upcoming car, the Air. Earlier this month, Lucid announced the expected range of the Air, 517 miles, which would make it the longest-range EV, beating Tesla’s Model S Long Range Plus with its 402 miles per charge. Now Lucid claims that the air will also be able to charge faster than Tesla, at a rate of 20 miles per minute, or up to 300 miles in a 20-minute charge.
To get this kind of charging percentage, you need to use a 900-volt charger with a peak charging percentage of 300 Kw, chargers with which Lucid cooperates America electrifying build. These Combined Charging System (CCS) standard DC charging stations could be deployed on one of Electrify America’s 2,000 charging stations, but so far I have not seen any hard figures on how many are actually deployed and ready, or what the future projections are.
I reached out to Lucid to inquire about this and will update when I hear back.
To compare charging rates, Tesla’s Superchargers can provide DC power at a rate of up to 250 kW, which comes about 15 miles per minute of charge, five miles per minute less than Lucid’s claims.
Lucid also provided this short video of an Air on account of what looks like a home station:
I’m a little confused as to why they included this video in the press release, because it does not have a plug with the fast charging DC pins on it, but it may be because the PR also discusses Lucid’s setup for home downloads , which allows for two-way charging.

That functionality would now be useful for California customers, who could pull out of their cars during the electricity outage rolling blackouts.
The Air could prove to be a real viable competitor to Tesla, though, with prices expected to start at around $ 100,000, it will not do much to compete with the Model 3 at the mass market level. Of course, almost every new EV named the one that will finally provide Tesla with real competition, and thanks to Tesla’s more intangible advantages in the public eye, this has proved more difficult than expected.
Yet the air has the figures and the appearance, so who knows?
