“I think a lot of things went wrong here,” Garcetti replied on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“We have not seen any national leadership,” added the mayor.
Garcetti said Los Angeles officials were forced to deal with “both out of our lane,” including managing tests and other factors related to the coronavirus pandemic.
He also criticized Trump for not wearing a face mask for months and for sending a message to Americans that the coronavirus pandemic was under control.
“I think when leaders say that, people react,” Garcetti said, adding that it makes people stop distancing themselves socially and stop wearing face masks.
“This was politicized when it should have been unified. We were alone when we should have had help, “he added. “We know it will be a marathon. Stop telling people that this will end soon … if we don’t unite as a nation with national leadership, we will see more people die. ”
He pushed Trump to take over and lead the nation through the increase in cases.

Tapper asked Garcetti how much worse the coronavirus surge should be in Los Angeles before issuing another order to stay home.
“I think we are on the brink,” said Garcetti.
However, the mayor added that he believes officials should take a “surgical” approach targeting the most affected areas rather than an order that “would simply shut everything down.”
