Americans ignore the virus, travel Thanksgiving
Millions of Americans are flocking to the skies and highways ahead of the Thanksgiving Day holiday and are at risk of a major virus spreading across the country. The CDC asks Americans to limit their travel and stay at home this holiday season. (Nov. 25)
U.S. on Friday. More than 200,000 COVID-19 cases were reported in, reaching an all-time high on November 4, three weeks after the first daily 100,000 cases were reported by the nation.
The Johns Hopkins University report doubles that rapid, reminiscent of the virus’s development this spring, when efforts to contain the virus due to a deadly outbreak were widely banned across the country.
But experts warn that the number of coronavirus tests is likely to fluctuate in the coming weeks or so fewer people are tested during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and test sites are short-lived.
The results report could have potential dips in the infection that give the illusion that the spread of the virus is getting easier, when in fact, the numbers say little about where the nation stands in the fight against Covid-19. According to Johns Hopkins University, the number of Americans who tested positive passed 13 million on Friday.
Here’s what to know on Saturday:
- Many state leaders are making efforts to slow the spread again. In Los Angeles County, a three-week stay-at-home order applies Monday. On Friday, the most populous county recorded an average of 50,000 cases a day over a five-day period, which triggered the order.

Data from Johns Hopkins University show that the total COVID-19 deaths in the month have been steadily rising, but the number of confirmed cases has risen sharply in recent weeks.
Because deaths are behind confirmed cases, sometimes for weeks, public health experts have been warning the country to adapt to early death amid the long-term forecasted seasonal upheaval of the Covid-1 spread.
“Given Europe’s experience, we expect that the increase in mortality will soon begin with an increase in cases,” the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation wrote in a November 12 briefing.
Coronavirus test numbers, which guide most of the nation’s response to the epidemic, are likely to be erratic in the coming weeks or more, experts said Friday, with far fewer people being tested during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and test sites being short-lived.
“I just hope people don’t misinterpret the numbers and think there was no big jump as a result of Thanksgiving, and then end up planning Christmas and Hanukkah and other trips,” said Dr. Liana Wayne. George and Washington Washington University and Emergency Physician.

The latter number, as well as the positive case numbers, which had dropped almost to the third Friday, could be adjusted as more results returned.

Los Angeles County announced a new stay-home order Friday as coronavirus cases spiral out of control in the country’s most populous country.
The three-week order goes into effect Monday, and the county has confirmed 24 new deaths and 4,544 new cases of COVID-19. The five-day average of new cases was 4,751.
The order advises residents to stay home “as much as possible” and to wear face wear when they go out.
It prohibits people from associating with people who are not in their homes, publicly or privately. Exceptions are made for church services and protests, “which are constitutionally protected rights,” the county Public Health said in a statement. Businesses and outdoor roads are also allowed to remain open.
Last week, California government Gavin News announced a new requirement that non-essential work, movements and gatherings be closed between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. for “red tire” counties currently under state control.

Ohio State University football coach Ryan Day has tested positive for COVID-19, the school announced Friday afternoon. The university also canceled its Saturday game against Illinois after more positive tests returned.
