Los Angeles Chargers QB Tyrode Taylor ‘recovering’ after chest pain, coach says

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lee said there were “difficulties” in treating quarterback Tyrode Taylor for chest pain on Sunday but Taylor was “recovering.”

Lee did not elaborate on the reason for Taylor’s hospitalization, but said the quarterback was on Sunday night and Monday in practice.

Although rookie Justin Herbert played a good game in his first start – a 23-20 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs – he is Taylor healthy as long as he is the team’s No. 2 quarterback.

“If the tire is 100 percent, that’s our quarterback,” Lynn said. He added that Herbert “is backed up for a reason.”

Lynn, however, said he did not yet have enough information to assess Taylor’s chances of playing Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

He would be more prepared this time if Herbert was approved again, as Lynn said he would get his rookie quarterback “more representatives in practice up to the back of Tyrode.”

The late change in the quarterback came as a surprise to everyone, with Ke Stein Eckler starting to run back, who said he didn’t know until Herbert started “everyone else didn’t know.”

Eckler praised Herbert, saying the first-round pick “handled himself well” and, in a few hit films, showed his toughness and athleticism.

Herbert was a 22-for-33 for 311 yards and a touchdown with a break. He also ran 4 yards for the score.
