There was a lot of talk about the “next step” for Lamar Jackson who came off a record-breaking MVP 2019 season.
While he and the Ravens will obviously be working on all facets of his game (he is just 23 years old), Jackson has pointed to a desire to be more consistent on deep passages as his primary focus.
It’s still early in training camp, but so far, so good. In practice on Tuesday, Jackson threw a handful of beautiful deep passages to his young wideouts, showing the promise of reinforcing another show of the Ravens’ top offense.
“We are doing much better than we were last year, especially on deep passes,” Jackson said after the practice.
Jackson connected twice on rookie wide receiver Devin Duvernay on deep passes, including one when Texas speedster came behind Pro Bowler Marcus Peters.
Jackson later hit his top wideout, Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, with a deep pass in one-on-one WR-CB drills, in which Brown shook Marlon Humphrey after he was originally locked up at the control line.
Jackson was also well underway, hitting second-year wide receiver Miles Boykin with a perfectly elevated pass below the sideline. Jackson also joined Willie Snead IV when he shuffled to the left. Snead made a nice toe-tapping sideline grip.
Here are some other notes from Tuesday’s padded practice:
- Boykin had a strong day with several fun plays deep and in controversial situations. The breadth of the second year is expected to take a big leap forward this year, and with reports from veteran agent Dez Bryant visiting, Boykin has shown he can live up to expectations.
