Local health departments reported new COVID-19 cases Thursday


HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – Eastern Kentucky health departments issued updates on Thursday on local coronavirus cases.

The Kentucky River District Health Department reported four confirmed positive cases and two probable cases. They include a 55-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman from Knott County, a 73-year-old woman from Letcher County, a 50-year-old man from Owsley County and an 84-year-old man from Perry. County. Officials said they still have 166 active cases recovering in their district with 262 recovering.

The Cumberland Valley Department of Health reported seven new cases in Rockcastle County on Thursday. They also reported one recovery in Clay County and two recoveries in Jackson County.

Officials with the Laurel County Health Department reported seven new cases. They include a seven-month-old boy, a 74-year-old woman, a 22-year-old man, a five-year-old boy, a 62-year-old woman, a 66-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman. They all recover at home.

The Bell County Department of Health reported five new cases, bringing their total to 327. 79 of those are still active and 248 have been recovered.

The Pike County Health Department announced five new cases Thursday, bringing the county’s total to 287. Of those cases, 34 remain active. One person is being treated in hospital while the rest are isolated at home. As the province draws closer to 300 cases, and other counties continue to see the spread, Public Administration Director Tammy Riley urges people to remember the 5 Cs: civic duty, staying calm, clean, covering and containing.

“You know, here we are in mid-August and it is still our strongest weapon and will, as far as we can see, remain our strongest weapon until a vaccine or treatment is available,” Riley said.

In Johnson County, health department officials are warning people attending a funeral at Phelps and Son Funeral Home on Aug. 8 to check for symptoms due to possible exposure to the virus.

The Lake Cumberland District Health Department’s report was late due to a power outage. They reported 14 new cases between Pulaski and McCreary County. The new cases are a 75-year-old man, a 73-year-old woman and a 61-year-old man in McCreary County and a 47-year-old woman, a nine-year-old girl, a 48-year-old man , an 82-year-old man, a 56-year-old woman, a 50-year-old woman, a 51-year-old man, a 35-year-old man, a 62-year-old man, a 33-year-old woman and a 76-year-old woman from Pulaski County.

Harlan County Judge Executive Dan Mosley on Thursday reported 10 new cases in his county, bringing their total since the pandemic began there to 288. 51 of those cases are still active. They include a 48-year-old woman, a 35-year-old man, a 21-year-old man, a 35-year-old woman, a 17-year-old girl, a 49-year-old woman, a 43-year-old man, a 73-year-old man , a 77-year-old woman and a 76-year-old woman. They are all at home in quarantine.

The Knox County Health Department reported two new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, bringing their total to 265. Floyd County added one new case, bringing its total to 116.
