Liverpool’s ‘buy-in time’ with a strategic shift to ignore Premier League title rivals

Allison Baker details the strategic tweak that helped Liverpool Romp to a record-breaking victory over Crystal Palace.

The Reds recorded the biggest long-distance flight win in club history when they won 7-0 at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Liverpool, however, faced a strong period of pressure in the first half before confirming what their biggest Premier League winning margin was.

And Ellis has explained how his playing style changed in the visitor defense league this season to finally earn just a fourth clean sheet.

“If you just look at the scoresheet you see it was a simple game for Liverpool, but it wasn’t,” the goalkeeper said. “We had to work really hard here.

“It’s always hard to play against Crystal Palace because of the way they play. They like to put the ball back and we like to press them and sometimes it comes out of our pressure.

“But at those moments we did really well, buying a little bit of time, a little bit of a reduction, a little bit of a defensive line so that the other players could come back and help the defense. That’s why I believe we’ve got a clean sheet.

“After that, with the ball we did really, really well – great.”

Liverpool are four points clear at the top after 14 games and are in the Premier League for the third consecutive Christmas.

Allison, however, is adamant the Reds are ignoring their title rivals and focusing only on their own form.

“It’s good, you’ve put pressure on opponents, other teams are fighting for first place there,” the Brazilian told Liverpool.com after Liverpool’s victory.
