Liverpool faces Divock Origi’s transfer decision as surprising fact emerges

From a late winner against Everton, a Champions League semi-final game against Barcelona and a decisive European Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur, Divock Origi has provided some historic moments for Liverpool.

But there was one on Wednesday that the striker may not be so eager to celebrate.

By replacing Mohamed Salah with seven minutes remaining against Arsenal at the Emirates, Origi was making his 82nd appearance off the bench.

And that saw him overtake Ryan Babel as the most-used substitute in Liverpool history.

Not a huge claim to fame, to be honest. But, in terms of Origi’s Anfield career, it couldn’t be more instructive.

Origi has made 138 appearances for the Reds, meaning that only 56 have made it as a starter. He has completed a full match only 22 times.

In fact, those aforementioned goals against Everton and Tottenham came after they brought him in during the second half.

This season, Origi has failed to reach the team of the day on just four occasions, not including the League Cup quarterfinals against Aston Villa.

However, it has been a campaign of diminishing returns, without a Premier League goal since his defense against Everton in December and only three other goals throughout the season.

And in his only start since the restart last month, he was dragged after an hour at his home to Aston Villa.

Since then, Origi stayed on the bench against Brighton and Burnley and saw Takumi Minamino presented first against Arsenal.

Now 25, the Belgian is approaching a crossroads, despite signing a new agreement just 12 months ago.

While his exploits mean he’ll always be loved by Liverpool fans, Origi needs regular football, and perhaps the Reds need a different option than the three established forwards.

Since the transfer window doesn’t close until early October, nothing needs to be resolved in the immediate future.

But both Origi and Liverpool face some interesting decisions this summer.
