The 72 annual Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be revealed on Tuesday, dropping the prestigious list of names that will compete for top honors from the Television Academy. And, as with many pandemic-era commercials, television fans can watch the nominations from the comfort of their own homes.
The announcement will take place in a live broadcast in accordance with health and safety guidelines. The ceremony, organized by “Saturday Night Live” star Leslie Jones, will begin at 8:30 am PT / 11:30 am ET and will be available on the Emmys website, Facebook and YouTube. Laverne Cox, Tatiana Maslany, Josh Gad and Television Academy President and CEO Frank Scherma will also present the nominations.
The eligibility period spanned from June 2019 to the end of May 2020, meaning many of the nominated programs will have finished filming before the COVID-19 pandemic closes production. But even with the royal awards show on ABC on September 20, which does not invite nominees to an event in person or after an official party, the competition to secure a nomination has not waned.
Some key categories this year had a record number of submissions, Variety reported in early July. In response to the increase in submissions, the Television Academy amended the rules for category nomination amounts. The number of nominees for certain categories, such as drama series, will increase to eight this year, while other categories will be based on the number of entries, with between zero and eight nominations.
Executive producers for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards include Ian Stewart, Jimmy Kimmel, Guy Carrington, David Jammy, and Reginald Hudlin. Kimmel will also present the show.
