May 25 is the deadline for the prestigious European Basketball Club Euroleague to decide on the fate of this year’s season.
If it was decided to extend the season, the rest of the tournament would take place in the summer in one of the countries selected by the Euroleague, and Lithuania is among the candidates for the final part of the Euroleague season. All other regular season games and playoffs would be played in Kaunas and Vilnius.
This decision also has the support of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania, Saulius Skvernelis, who addressed the Euroleague in an official letter and presented arguments on the basis of which our country should receive that right. The Prime Minister also assured that the Government would do everything possible to guarantee the health safety of the teams, the referees and other officials.
The Kaunas “Žalgiris” stadium, whose representatives are in constant contact with the Euroleague and resolve various technical and security details, is already preparing to organize the remaining battles of the season.
Lithuania is one of the best countries in Europe that has controlled the COVID-19 virus and has now started the quarantine relaxation phase, which allows professional sports matches to be organized without spectators since May 30.
Already on Monday, all Kaunas “Žalgiris” basketball players who will remain in Lithuania will gather for a joint training. If the legionaries of “Žalgiris” and Martin Geben, who went to the United States, will join the training, it will be clear after the Euroleague’s decision to extend the season.
