As the COVID-19 pandemic situation improved in the country and the government eased quarantine conditions, Kaunas Žalgiris basketball players in Lithuania gathered to train at the Žalgiris Arena.
Paulius Jankūnas, Edgaras Ulanovas, Artūras Milaknis, Lukas Lekavičius, Marius Grigonis, Rokas Jokubaitis and Karolis Lukošiūnas participated in the training together with the coaches after a long break to meet all health safety requirements. At that time, all the team’s legionaries and Lithuanian Martin Geben are still abroad and awaiting the Euroleague’s decision on next season’s fate.
During the quarantine period, the people of Žalgiris exercised individually according to the trainers’ programs prepared for each person and had time to heal the injuries that caused discomfort during the season.
“During quarantine, we try to individualize the workload of the players, to load them as much as possible at home.” The first month was devoted to the healing of several microtraumas, and then we tried to get out of the situation. Now we are finally starting to move at a normal pace, but it is definitely not the case that we start from scratch this introductory week. Each of the athletes moved, so we will start the introductory week with more intensity, ”said Justinas Grainys, the team’s fitness coach, at the Žalgiris Arena.
The future of the Euroleague season needs to be clarified before May 25, and the Euroleague Players Association (EFTA), of which Jankūnas de Žalgiris is a member, has also been actively involved in discussions on the decision. The latter acknowledged that optimism about the season’s extension was fading.
“We missed the arena, the locker room, the teammates, the coaches. Good feeling. When the quarantine started and the season stopped, I was optimistic, but later that optimism diminished. There’s not much left and we’ll know everything, “said the team captain.
If the Euroleague decides to extend the season, the teams will play the remaining six games of the regular season and then the playoffs.
