Worried message from toxicologist: “We have more problems with medication this year”

According to the director of the Toxicology Center of the Vilnius Republican University Hospital, dr. Robert Badaro, although the quarantine has not changed much the daily routine of toxicologists, there are worrying trends.

“We have more problems with medication this year. I do not know if it is related, but the growth is being monitored and perhaps the quarantine has also contributed to it,” he told the Seimas during the international conference “Addiction treatment in Lithuania and the world “.

Abusing or not following your doctor’s instructions

According to the doctor, the increased use of drugs would include both self-medication and abuse, a use not prescribed by a doctor.

When asked if such drug use could have worse consequences than psychoactive substances, Badar emphasized that these were sides of the same thing.

“Psychoactive substances also include medications if they are not prescribed by a doctor. According to the European Observatory of Psychoactive Substances, this is one of the four growing [psichoaktyvių medžiagų] groups in recent years that are used specifically for stunning purposes.

That is why it is impossible to distinguish between “good people” here and “bad people” here. Paracelsus already said 200 years ago that only the dose distinguishes the drug from the poison and only the purpose of consumption. If used as prescribed by a doctor, there are generally no problems or minimal problems, “explained the toxicologist.

Drug dependency

Decriminalization of ‘weed’ is essential

Commenting on another topic that is now highly debated in public about the decriminalization of marijuana, Badar stressed that we will not invent anything new here.

“If we think that we are going as a kind of icebreaker from the beginning, then things like that have been done more than once and twice. Not only theoretical experience, but also practical experience shows that decriminalization alleviates the situation in every way, “said the doctor.

Speaking at the same time of patients, he added that decriminalization is a necessary but not sufficient condition:

“The rules of good tone require that patients are not punished for such things, which everyone has known for a long time. This is the first step that must be taken, even in line with the recommendations of the European Union.”

I don’t know what to consume

At the same time, the toxicologist pointed out that, at least for young people and the psychoactive substances they consume, the biggest problem is the so-called new psychoactive substances.

“There are dozens of groups. If most of the consumption of these” classic “substances at least knows what they are consuming, then with the new substances you usually pay for what you expect, but not for what you buy. they are often not even predictable for the consumer, ”Badar said.

The doctor has previously explained to the portal tv3.lt about the dangers of these substances. According to him, after it is not clear which “cocktail” of such chemicals is consumed, human behavior becomes unpredictable, it is caught with senseless and unmotivated aggression.

“Common effects of these substances are psychosis, self-harm and serious health problems related to blood pressure that even lead to strokes. The youngest patient of this type was 18 years old.

There are also fatal cases, but the problem is that most of these cases are not recognized because we simply do not have the tools to do so. Therefore, it is not surprising that little is said about these substances in general, ”said the doctor.
