Why some Socdems didn’t ask Paluck, even Sys can’t answer

The opposition with Ramūnas Karbauskis, who had not yet managed to leave the Seimas, could not block Šimonyte’s path to the prime ministers, surrendered to the Socialists; most of them just didn’t vote.

Today’s meeting, which should not have been even if it was not necessary for the Prime Minister to approve Šimonytė and consider next year’s budget. The Seimas, after becoming a true home of the Covid-19, is surrounded by at least a couple of infected parliamentarians who do not know it yet, and not everyone cares about the recommendations to be careful. You should not drink in the hallway, but many, as by the way, are well cooked. Several MPs don’t even bother to speak on the rostrum with their noses poking out from under their masks.

And the ruling majority has another problem: how to scrape the votes and approve Šimonytė as prime minister. There may be a lack of votes for several reasons: because blocking Šimonytė’s candidacy is Karbauskis’s last job on his last day of work at the Seimas.

“Looking at the list of candidates for members of the Government, listening to what is said about values, we will not be able to support Šimonytė”, says Ramūnas Karbauskis, president of the peasantry.

“The Labor Party is an opposition party, so we will abstain from voting,” says Vigilijus Jukna from Riga.

“The Social Democratic faction will not vote for the candidacy of Ingrida Šimonytė,” says Gintautas Paluckas, president of the Social Democrats.

And the third reason is the coronavirus, or yesterday’s order from the National Center for Public Health to isolate the entire Liberal Movement. Ten chairs are empty, although the parliamentary evidence is negative. This decision outrages the right. According to them, the Liberals are isolated simply because they belong to the same faction, although, for example, Glaveck, who has just left it, but has been in contact with the Liberals and still does not normally wear a mask, may be in the Seimas.

“Even after the entire period of isolation, they are forced to become so simply because they belong to a political group,” said Conservative President Gabriel Landsbergis.

“Veryga orders us with its subordinate institutions and tells us where to stay,” says conservative Kęstutis Masiulis.

“I’m not doing those epidemiological studies, I couldn’t comment on the details,” says Aurelijus Veryga, the acting health minister.

Minus 10 votes massively melts the ranks on the right. Only 60 rulers remain, with about 50 members in the opposition, and it is difficult to predict in advance how 13 members of the mixed group will vote. The right is still trying to tip skeptics over which button to push.

“She is better prepared for this job than anyone else in this room or anyone else in Lithuanian politics now,” says Aušrinė Armonaitė, the chair of the Freedom Party.

“Who is speaking as he is, who is telling the truth, which may be uncomfortable for some,” said conservative Mindaugas Lingė.

In the hall, Šimonytė herself attempts to refute allegations that some of her proposed ministers are weak:

“I look at the team as a whole, I see qualities in the people that seem appropriate to do the jobs that seem like a priority to me.”

In case of lack of votes, the procedure would have to be repeated again after a week and a half, because only then, after the recess, would the Seimas meet in the room.

“While I have been very reluctant to quote Schweik for the past few years, I will take him here and not refrain:“ Somehow it will remain. It has never been that there is no way, ”says Prime Minister-designate Ingrida Šimonytė.

Help, however, comes literally on foot. When the decisive moment arrives, up to eight soccer chairs remain empty in the room, which is called “voting on foot” or informal support. Why some Socdems didn’t ask Paluck, this time even Sys can’t answer.

“We should ask our friends who did not vote because the group’s decision was to abstain,” says Social Democrat Algirdas Sys.

And the fewer opposition voters, the more likely it is that the rulers will win a majority. By the way, one peasant did not obey Karbauskis: Vinkus, three workers and five members of the Mixto Seimas group of members supported Šimonytė. Therefore, in principle, Karbauskis, who pressed the button for the last time, did not reach his goal: Šimonytė squeezes the victory with difficulty.

The future prime minister of flowers has yet to arrive. However, he is outraged by the actions of the National Center for Public Health.

“I hope the NVSC is not a faction wholesaler, sometimes in dubious circumstances,” says I. Šimonytė.

Landsberg is outraged. It turns out that there was little that the right wing had even fewer votes. Just before the vote, news broke that Gabrielius Landsbergis and Aušrinė Armonaitė must also isolate themselves after contact with already sick relatives. Their test results are negative and they still say they haven’t received any messages that they need to sit at home.

“You don’t need to learn such things from the media, I don’t understand why the NVSC didn’t warn,” said Aušrinė Armonaitė, chair of the Freedom Party.

Already after the vote, it became clear that two more conservatives, Vytautas Juozapaitis and Andrius Kupčinskas, received a positive response to the Covid-19 test. They both came to work in the morning, signed up for the meeting. However, after receiving the test results, he withdrew. Thus, a total of 5 members of the Seimas currently suffer from coronavirus. And the parliament takes a break until next Thursday.
