The World Health Organization (WHO) confirms that it is aware of a new COVID-19 coronavirus strain identified in the United Kingdom.

The new genetic strain of the virus has been announced by UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock. According to him, as reported by the BBC, the new strain of coronavirus was found to be spreading faster and, according to him, it was recorded by about 60 different local authorities in England.

In the House of Commons, he said the strain was linked to the exponentially rapid development of the virus last week in London, Kent, Essex and Hertfordshire. Although there is no evidence that the new strain of the virus is more dangerous than the previous virus or that it is resistant to developed vaccines.

“Whatever the reason, we must take the swift and decisive action necessary to control this deadly disease,” Hancock said.

Expert Prof. from the University of Birmingham. Alan McNally said UK labs have already been investigating the new strain of the virus in recent weeks.

“You don’t have to panic. This doesn’t mean it’s more contagious or more dangerous. It just needs to be monitored,” he told the BBC.

WHO expert Mike Ryan said the organization is aware of this genetically new strain of the virus, which has been found in about 1,000 people in the UK. Researchers are currently investigating how important it is.

“The virus develops and changes over time,” he told Reuters.
