While both indicators should be registered in the coming days, the WHO has emphasized that it is never too late to take action to resolve the COVID-19 crisis that has engulfed the planet.
“We will reach 20 million this week. COVID-19 registered cases and 750 thousand. Deaths,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a virtual press conference.
“There is a lot of pain and suffering behind these statistics. Every life lost is important.” I know that many of you are grieving and that this is a difficult time for the world, “he said.
“But I want to make it clear: there are green shoots of hope … it is never too late to get over an outbreak,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The WHO chief cited as an example the countries that have managed to successfully control the spread of the coronavirus: New Zealand and Rwanda.
He also welcomed the decision by Britain and France to take urgent action to curb further outbreaks, such as the introduction of quarantine around chimneys in the north of England and the requirement to wear masks in crowded Parisian public spaces.
“My message is quite clear: let’s stop, stop, stop the virus,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“If we effectively curb the virus, we will be able to safely open it to the public,” he added.
