“All the grandparents are looking forward to my arrival,” says Vaiva. “They tell me, ‘Vaivute, how happy you are!’ I’m waiting so long for you! “
Vaiva has been working in the “Food on Wheels” program in Klaipeda for only a couple of months, but she already knows all the elderly people in her care and is very friendly with them.
“I am currently transporting food to 40 elderly people who are scattered throughout the city,” says the girl. “For the weakest, I take the hot soup already cooked and the second course, for the strongest, I take the food sets so that I can prepare the food myself.”
According to Vaiva, although the first day of work it took him a little to find the addresses of all the elderly in a big city, he now transports food to them easily and quickly with a Maltese car.

“I’m not from Klaipeda, I grew up in Joniškis,” says the girl. – I grew up in a very beautiful loving family, which instilled in me love for my elders. I spent every summer in town with my grandparents, I helped them in all their work, I interacted a lot with them … “
According to Vaiva, even then she wanted to link her life to helping others and above all she wanted to help older people.
“I don’t know why, but I always wanted to help my grandparents,” Vaiva recalls. “I understand the need to help both children and the disabled, but I personally wanted to help grandparents …”
Vaiva is glad that after deciding to enter Klaipeda College to study social work, she received the full support of her family.

“I am glad that my parents did not encourage me to go to work where I could earn as fast as possible, but rather they allowed me to choose the activity that attracted my heart,” says the girl. “The most important thing for my parents was that I would grow up well, honest and willing to help others, I would value my family, I would see my happiness in it … My parents were very supportive of my decision to study social work.”
Vaiva entered Klaipėda College and in the second year found out about the possibility of joining the Klaipėda Maltese team, who at that time was only looking for an employee for their “Food on Wheels” program.
“I participated in job interviews with Darius Einars, director of Klaipėda MOPT, and Jolanta, director of the Republican Maltese program Food on Wheels, who came from Vilnius to meet me,” recalls Vaiva. “I am very happy and proud to have received this job.”
According to the girl, she really likes the Maltese team in Klaipeda, their warm communication and efficiency.
He loves to communicate with grandparents.
“I am very happy that most of the grandparents I visit are very kind and bright people,” says Vaiva. “I am surprised that some people think that older people are no longer interested in anything, but only talk about their illnesses …”
According to Vaiva, this is definitely not the case, when she visits her adoptive grandparents, she is always in a good mood.
“Those grandmothers that I visit are true enlightenments, very kind and good,” says the girl. – They are very interested, they read a lot, they watch television, they listen to the radio. It’s a shame they live alone, but certainly not because of you. The relatives of some are dead, others are not visited by children because they live and work abroad. Your neighbors are busy with their work, they don’t have time to communicate … “
According to Vaiva, there are also highly educated elders from whom he draws new knowledge and experiences.
“For example, I bring soup to a former sculptor,” he says. “He shows me the designs of his sculptures, tells me how they were created, allows me to browse through various foreign architecture publications.”
Other grandmothers display handmade Vaivai crafts, knitted socks and gloves.
“So you can see the amazing crafts those grandmothers have created! Vaiva shares her thoughts. “However, it is a pity that not everyone can do it for health reasons; some have vision problems, others have pain in the joints of the hands or some other disease.”
However, all the grandparents visited by the girl have a great need for communication, as some of them do not leave their apartment even after a few years.
“Communication is especially important for people who have difficulty moving around and can no longer just go out, but even visit a neighbor,” the girl shares. “A grandmother complained to me that she had not been out on the patio for over three years because she could barely walk around her room.”
According to Vaiva, her grandparents are very happy with the Maltese project “Food on Wheels”, because thanks to her they can communicate with her, in addition to getting hot food, which they could not prepare themselves.
“The grandparents are always very happy with my arrival,” says the girl. “How good, Vaivute, that you visit me, how good to see you,” a grandmother keeps telling me. “I’m still here and there, no one visits me anymore, and not only do you talk to me, but you also bring food …”
According to Vaiva, he regrets very much that after bringing the soup or the products he can no longer keep them, because he has to bring food to many older people throughout the city.
“It’s really a shame to go and leave those people alone again,” says the girl. – I know that they will look at the photos of their dead loved ones again and await my next arrival. How sad that at the end of life bright, educated, good people are forced to live like this … “
Incident with a room
Knowing perfectly how her grandparents await her, Vaiva is always alarmed if an elderly person does not open the door for her.
“Of course, grandparents sometimes have the necessary things, to go to the polyclinic or other important things,” says Vaiva, “but this rarely happens …”
But recently, this is exactly what happened to Senile Emilia, with whom Vaiva became close friends.
“I love Emilia very much,” Vaiva shares her thoughts. – She is very nice, very enlightened. He always hugs me, thanks me for bringing soup. She was still trying to go for a walk … “
Not finding Emilia on Friday, Vaiva thought that Grandma had probably gone for a walk.
“But when I went to see her with the soup on Monday and Emilia didn’t open it for me again, I immediately realized that something bad had happened to her,” recalls Vaiva. “My colleague and I immediately began to visit the neighbors on her staircase, asking if anyone had seen or interacted with Emilia in the last few days.”
But none of the neighbor’s grandmothers had seen her for days and knew where she might be.
As a result, the police and special services were called urgently, who entered the apartment and found the old woman unconscious in bed.
“The latest news about Emilia is sad,” Vaiva said in an upset speech. “She’s in a coma right now …”
According to the girl, helping grandparents is her way of life, her vocation.
“Emilia is now in the hospital, but many others need my help,” says the girl. – But when there is such a disaster, when a person I knew and loved is seriously ill or dies, I always feel that I can pay more attention to him, show him more love, communicate more … I always have to find time. for that, no matter how busy you are. “
