The largest event of its kind in the Baltics, yearned for by many residents and especially the agribusiness community, promises to surprise visitors with unique exhibits and innovations, thus confirming that Lithuanian agriculture, which generates a fifth of exports of the country, it is already on the market. vanguard of the world.

Association between science and business

“Recently, there is more and more talk of the fourth industrial revolution in the world. And obviously she goes into agriculture first. Globally, not only is the demand for food products growing, but also the need to reduce production costs and conserve natural and energy resources. As Europe moves resolutely towards agribusiness, smart technologies based on the latest knowledge in computer science, physics, chemistry and agronomy are rapidly penetrating agribusiness. I would say that agriculture in Lithuania today is the field in which probably the most intelligent technologies have been implemented in information databases ”, says the rector of Vytautas Magnus University, Prof. Astrida Miceikienė.

He points out that the exhibitions “What to sow …” are actually events that crown the results of cooperation between academics and business representatives, because researchers from the Vytautas Magnus University together with progressive farmers, companies that provide products and services to agriculture- sector cooperate constantly. , conduct experiments, implement projects, test new technologies and innovate.

“One of the most important missions of the university is to educate the public. It is obvious that the exhibitions organized by us, which gather crowds of people, and their educational programs are excellent tools for the implementation of this mission by revealing to the public the possibilities and perspectives of modern agriculture ”, comments A. Miceikienė on the objectives. of the future event.

From seedlings of productive varieties to knowledge of the bioeconomy

Up to 150 companies that present agricultural innovations and about 100 small merchants are expected at the Academy, which will become a center for the dissemination of knowledge and innovation for three days. (Before the pandemic, some 70,000 visitors visited similar exhibits at Vytautas Magnus University.)

Dr. Vytautas Magnus, Manager of the University Business and Social Collaboration Center, Dr. Virginijus Venskutonis says that traditionally the exhibition of agricultural machinery will be the most abundant. State-of-the-art storage equipment, facilities and products for livestock, poultry, forestry and utilities, digital technologies for agriculture, seeds, plant protection products, fertilizers, construction, water management, thermal products and many other products will also be included. and services. be featured. A rich educational program awaits visitors to the exhibition, without which the exhibitions taking place at Vytautas Magnus University will not be possible. The educational program “What to sow … 2017” has become one of the winners of the science promotion measures competition announced by the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.

It wasn’t just the pandemic that adjusted the program’s schedule

“After assessing the situation regarding the coronavirus pandemic and taking into account the suggestions of the participants and partners of the permanent exhibitions, we decided to organize this important event for Lithuania as a whole this fall. We are aware that “What to sow …” is traditionally associated with the beginning of the working year, but sometimes circumstances beyond our control encourage us to seek new solutions. The moment chosen correctly is a strategic condition for the success of the event. Agricultural exhibitions in western countries are also often organized in the autumn, when you can breathe a sigh of relief after the intense work season and make plans for further development, ”says the director of the Center for Social and Business Associations at Vytautas University. Magnus. … ”The idea itself is Western.

The contrast between the 1st and the 25th is a smile today

V. Venskutonis says that the then rector of the university prof. Albinas Kusta, who returned from a trip to the United States in 1995, where she had the opportunity to visit an agricultural exhibition, began encouraging her colleagues to take the initiative to cooperate more actively with business. By this time, the companies that had now become agribusiness leaders had already entered the market, which also encouraged the university to take the initiative to bring everyone together.

“The business was right, because the main objective of the exhibitions is the dissemination of scientific innovations. Frankly, he smiles today as he remembers the conditions in which his first exhibition was successfully held, which fitted into the lobby of one of the faculties. Throughout the university, we received a charity computer and fax machine, the paper “carpet” of which was spread throughout the office. The format of the exhibitions began to grow rapidly as Lithuanian farmers began to use EU structural funds. Because the exhibitions were probably the only opportunity to look closely and choose a new modern western agricultural machinery ”, V. Venskutonis emphasizes the importance of the agricultural exhibitions that take place at Vytautas Magnus University.
