One of them – the exclusive product of the farmer Audronė Ispyrian “Raspberry seed oil” received a gold medal. The research group of Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Faculty of Chemical Technology (CTF), led by Professor Rimantas Venskutonis, participated in its development, the report reads.
The KTU CTF “Functional Nutrients” research group is considerable, but PhD student Laura Tamkutė, Associate Professor Audrius Pukalskas, Junior Researcher Rita Kazernavičiūtė contributed to the development of this product.
The raspberry seed oil produced and marketed by A. Ispyrian, a Kelmė district farmer, stands out in several respects: the cultivation system, the high value-added innovation based on sustainable science, and the composition and benefits for the product health. No harmful chemicals are used in the production of the oil.
“The product is ecological, natural, made from production residues of raspberry products (pure), contains many substances that promote health: polyunsaturated fatty acids, tocopherols (vitamin E), phytosterols, carotenoids”, says Professor R Venskutonis on the benefits of the gold medal. .
The researchers note that the ratio of omega-6 (linoleic) to omega-3 fatty acids in the oil is very favorable for nutrition. Health claims have been approved for these acids in the EU. The oil is also rich in tocopherols, compounds with vitamin E activity. A health claim has been confirmed for this vitamin: Vitamin E helps protect cells from oxidative damage.
The product’s processing technology is unique in that the oil is extracted from dried and ground berry seeds using innovative technology. Raspberry pulp seed oil is extracted by an environmentally friendly method by extracting ground pulp with super-citric food carbon dioxide. After extraction, no residual solvent remains.
Researchers have concluded that this is the best way to extract very high quality oil: no solvents are used, it is particularly environmentally friendly, and the properties of the oil are significantly better than oils obtained by other means.
