Wearing a mask and new clothes – Šarūnas Jasikevičius had his first training session in Barcelona

Barcelona’s basketball players trained for the first time at the Palau Blaugrana Arena after a 150-day hiatus.

The Euroleague season, interrupted by the pandemic, and the short final of the Spanish League in Valencia and the preparations in the Sports City Pavilion have moved the team away from the main arena, where a new coach has appeared.

Former Kaunas “Žalgiris” strategist Šarūnas Jasikevičius led the first training session for the “Barcelona” men.

Not all the players are in the squad yet, but the club’s new star, Nick Calathes, and the other player Thomas Heurtelis have already trained together with youngsters Leandro Bolmaro, Sergi Martinezy, Sleix Fontu, as well as Latvian Rolandas Šmitas and the Ukrainian Artiomas Pustovojis.

Other basketball players will still undergo a medical exam. The full team is expected on August 14.

The first official match and debut of Š. Jasikevičius at the helm of Barcelona is scheduled for September 4, when the semifinal of the Catalan League will be played at the Palau Blaugrana Arena with BAXI from Manresa.

A more important test awaits on September 12: Barcelona will play Baskonia in the semifinals of the Spanish League Super Cup in Tenerife.

Š.Jasikevičius, who has become the coach of the Barcelona team this summer, is working together with several other Lithuanians. Darius Maskoliūnas, Tomas Masiulis and Justinas Grainys also left Kaunas “Žalgiris” and joined the coaching staff of “Barcelona”.

Fitness coach J.Grainys is probably the most important in exercise right now – he directs the workloads of basketball players in the first few weeks.
