Vilkaviškis is unique due to British COVID-19 mutation? The doctor thinks that in other parts of Lithuania, this variety is probably much more common.

On Wednesday evening, the Health Ministry announced that six cases of the British variety had been identified after sequencing investigations in Vilkaviškis..

A total of 11 cases of the British strain of coronavirus (COVID-19) were detected in our country during that day: another 4 in Kaunas and one in Marijampolė.

Representatives of the National Center for Public Health (NVSC), specialists are currently continuing the investigation, but it is already known that the six cases are related to the outbreak at Vilkaviškis Hospital..

According to L. Blažaitis, some people were tested for coronavirus prophylaxis at Vilkaviškis Hospital, while others were screened for typical symptoms of this infection.

NVSC specialists explain the possible circumstances of your infection and the contacts they have.

L. Blažaitis emphasized that sequencing studies on possible COVID-19 mutations do not depend on Vilkaviškis Hospital.

Every day, the hospital sends around 40 coronavirus samples (to staff, patients admitted to the hospital, to its Admissions Department and others) to the Medical Practice Laboratory.

“And who selected those samples, why we selected them and how we selected them, we do not report. Here’s a medical practice to explain, you may know. We don’t know why they chose us, ”explained the director of the Vilkaviškis Hospital.

L. Blažaitis said that the identities of patients infected with the British strain of the coronavirus are known.

The doctor mentioned that they all were tested on February 10. Of all the samples taken, 6 were found to be of the British strain.

“One employee, the other patients,” said the director of the Vilkaviškis Hospital. They are currently not receiving treatment at this treatment center.

An employee, the other patients.

“It just came to our notice then. I know unofficially that there are some patients at Marijampolė Hospital,” he said.

An employee at Vilkaviškis Hospital, who was also diagnosed with the COVID-19 mutation, which had spread from the UK, was isolated. According to L. Blažaitis, other employees of the medical institution were not infected.

Consider more cases elsewhere

From the information published in the media, L. Blažaitis knows that 96 samples were examined in the laboratory of the Kaunas clinics during the mentioned time.

However, he does not know whether, for example, all samples taken at Vilkaviškis Hospital on February 10 were examined for the coronavirus.

“Yesterday I discovered that among those 10 daily samples, there is a British variety in 6 samples. I did not know why they were investigating, what they were investigating or if they were investigating everyone and nobody gives me that information, ”explained the doctor.

L. Blažaitis believes that the only thing Vilkaviškis in Lithuania now stands out for the British variety (a total of 12 cases of this mutation have been confirmed in the country so far) is that the samples taken from here were analyzed.

“If we take a bigger one, let’s say we take 100, 200 or 500 samples and we just start analyzing them by sequencing, they would find that there is probably significantly more of that British variant.” But this is an expensive and time-consuming method. I think it will take a day or two and Vilkaviškis will have very little of that British variety, everyone else will have much more, ”says the director of Vilkaviškis Hospital.
