Vilnius Gediminas Technical University is rebranding. It is not just the university logo that is being updated. The long name – Vilnius Gediminas Technical University – remains, but from now on the abbreviation “Vilnius Tech” will be used instead of VGTU.
According to Vilnius Tech Rector prof. Dr. Alfonsas Daniūnas, the changes were driven by various reasons, first of all, the need to better reflect the work of the university. “The university, like any other organization, advances step by step. We can be constantly happy with new achievements and achievements in various fields, so it is very important that the name and logo that reflect us express our actual activities. The university brand has not been renewed for a long time, so it is natural that renewal is inevitable due to changes in the environment around us, ”says A. Daniūnas.
According to him, another important driver for change is the orientation to the international market. “30 percent. All study programs at the university are conducted in English. 2019 foreign exchange and undergraduate students accounted for 13.5 percent. Of all university students. This number is growing every year, so we see its value and popularity in the international market. We also want the name of the university to be easier to understand and acceptable to the international public. The combination of a country or capital and technology on behalf of a university is well recognized all over the world and clearly shows the orientation of the higher education institution, moreover, it is easy to apply and understand in Lithuanian and English. There are many successful examples such as Georgia Tech, CalTech, TalTech, etc., which are strong universities international technology, ”says the rector of Vilnius Tech.
When thinking about rebranding, it was important to express the university’s essence, core values, and strategic goals. “Our roots, our essence and our future are linked to technology. Even if we deepen our knowledge in architecture, creative industries or economics, our base, the difference with other universities and the driving force is that we are a university of technology. This is exactly what Vilnius Tech describes, – emphasizes the Rector.
The rebranding process is unique in that the entire university community has been involved. Gather initial ideas, together with partners Synthesis Consulting and Critical Focus groups were held with the university management, students, professors and students were interviewed. Polls have shown that the community is in favor of change. A vote was also held during which community members were able to express their sympathy for one of the prepared versions of the university logo. The voice of the community was decisive in this process.
The new Vilnius Tech logo encodes the first two letters of the name, V and T. The so-called “Gestalt principle” is used, which encodes various symbols in an image and thus allows people to give their own meaning to the image. visible image. In this case, the connection of V and T creates the shape of a shield, which is an associative expression of the silhouette of the coat of arms. The aim of this association was to modernize the impression of a modern university with its historical context and origins.
According to the rector of Vilnius Tech, these changes should give impetus and new energy to the entire community. Speaking of the goals of the future, A. Daniūnas mentions the subsequent process of digitization of studies, attention to artificial intelligence, robotics and other fields of study now very important. “We need to look even further to the future and train the specialists you need, we will further strengthen interdisciplinarity. No matter how good we look on the world stage, we are a Lithuanian university and our mission is to contribute to the development and progress of the country. Therefore, cooperation with various institutions and companies will continue to be very important to us. We hope that these changes will bring added value, but all results, as in the past, will depend on all our work, ”says the Rector of Vilnius Tech.
