“It just came to our notice then. We will likely have the procedure approved next week,” he said during the Seimas Board session on Thursday.

On the other hand, the Minister stressed that the establishment of procedures for the use of rapid antigens does not mean that they will soon be used on a massive scale.

“In some places it is possible to buy in small quantities, some people are already buying, but at the state level you will need to buy in large quantities. We are cornered, after all, we have to do everything neatly, we cannot rush anywhere, “said A. Veryga.

He assured that Lithuania would definitely buy such tests.

“The European Commission buys in mid-December and countries should also receive them. Lithuania has expressed its desire to receive such tests, “said the minister.

Veryga also announced that arrangements will be made next week to avoid isolating people with COVID-19 for some time.

“We will have this order, I can really say that there will be an order that we will not have to isolate ourselves from the disease for a while. We will likely have that decision next week, “he said.

The Council of Health Experts convened by President Gitanas Nausėda recommends that Lithuania acquire rapid antigen tests and use them in the diagnosis of COVID-19 in addition to molecular tests (PCR).

For rapid antigen tests, as for PCR assays, a sample from the nasopharynx is used. This method is less expensive, allows more rapid screening, and does not require highly qualified personnel to conduct the investigation.

However, experts note that the sensitivity of antigen assays is lower than that of PCR assays. Antigen testing suggests spot testing.
