“My suggestion was for the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports to think about the possibility of giving this type of vacation to all students: both primary school and basic education and gymnastics. Use that period like during the autumn holidays as a kind of pause, “said the minister during a press conference.
He made such a proposal at the Government’s COVID-19 Steering Committee on Monday.
“It just came to our knowledge then. Apparently, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports should evaluate the possibility of taking the license and the possibility of advancing it,” said A. Veryga.
He stressed that it would not be proposed to suspend preschool education, which would prevent many younger workers from working, and that part of the kindergartens would in any case have to function to ensure the education of children in critical occupations.
The Christmas holidays should start on December 23 and continue until January 5.
On Monday, the Lithuanian Education Workers’ Union asked Prime Minister-appointed Ingrid Šimonytė to reassess the situation regarding the future work of educational institutions and to consider the possibility of working remotely alone.
According to the union’s appeal, with the rapid spread of the virus, “the situation becomes especially unfavorable in preschool, preschool and primary education institutions, because they are the ones who work in contact form.”
Older students have switched to distance or blended learning since early November.
With the introduction of quarantine in the country on November 7, education, with the exception of preschool and primary education, is carried out remotely or mixed. The quarantine currently runs until December 17 inclusive.
