The minister announced that he had signed an official appeal to the new leadership of the Seimas and the leaders of the ruling parties, in which he proposed to suspend the work of the Seimas for 2 weeks.

“I offered our help and that of NVSC to control the spread of the coronavirus in the Seimas. Due to the current situation in the Seimas, it can be unequivocally called a chimney that expands every day. In this appeal, I emphasized that action should be taken immediately and it is recommended to suspend the work of the Seimas for at least a couple of weeks without exception.

I would like to point out that there is no need to speculate about telecommuting and the like, which have not yet been adopted by the Seimas and would take time. However, the Seimas cannot organize plenary sessions and other work for a couple of weeks. Because now the isolation of the sick and of those who have been in contact with them must be the most important thing, ”said A. Veryga.

He stressed that there is no solution and only tests before the meetings.

“As already mentioned and emphasized, even with a negative test, a person may already be infected,” he said.

Called to lead by example

According to A. Veryga, the ruling majority has repeatedly emphasized that it has a plan to control the coronavirus in Lithuania, so now it could lead by example.

“I want to invite everyone to start with a simpler part of the plan: control the fireplace in the Seimas. And demonstrate in real life, because there is that opportunity and the need to show that you are ready to handle the situation on a much larger scale. , to handle it not only in parliament, but also throughout the country, “he said.

He stressed that the work that is currently being done at the Seimas can really wait, and two weeks is a realistic term when it is possible to control the fireplace, locate it, it just takes desire and responsibility.

The Minister also pointed out that many Seimas employees also belong to the risk age group.

Has made suggestions before

Veryga also said that the ministry had previously advised Seimas on how to work during the pandemic.

“And now [teikėm siūlymus] by oath of the members of the Seimas. Unfortunately, we received very categorical explanations from the President of the Constitutional Court that nothing can be changed there, ”said the Minister.

According to him, the parliament itself in the spring did not support the proposals on teleworking.

“The ministry cannot directly influence the work of the Seimas,” he said.

During the vote on teleworking, Mr. Veryga himself abstained.

“During teleworking, according to the models that were proposed, they should at least meet to vote, which means that they would be physically on the premises, they would meet, they would communicate, contact would not be interrupted,” added the minister.

When asked if there was a risk that if the work of the Seimas were currently suspended, the deadlines set by law to form a new government might not be met, A. Veryga said that the Board of the Seimas should evaluate this.

“I’m certainly not a very good expert on all these constitutional details, I think it should be evaluated by the Seimas Board in consultation with the Seimas lawyers. From what I had to talk about, it was how to fit into terms.” … There may be more stress on the budget itself, but solutions need to be found, “he said.

On Thursday, it was announced that COVID-19 had been established for the President of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilyte-Nielsen and the former Speaker of the Parliament Viktorija Pranckietis.

Several other current and former MPs have previously contracted the coronavirus.
