The State Medicines Control Agency, after receiving information from the Austrian competent authority, has recommended the temporary suspension of the use of the AstraZeneca ABV5300 series.

Austria stopped vaccination with AstraZeneca this week after a 49-year-old woman died of blood clotting problems and another 35-year-old woman developed a pulmonary embolism. These reactions are investigated to elucidate the causal relationship.

“SAM and international experts emphasize that there are no objective reasons to be concerned or concerned. Based on data from clinical trials, thromboembolism is not a typical side effect of the AstraZeneca vaccine, the ministry said in a statement.

“The international analysis initiated of the reports of side effects also does not show similar cases in the past. To guarantee public safety and clear up doubts, the objective is to test any presumption about the safety of vaccines, ”it read.

According to the Ministry, on February 11, 9.6 thousand tons of goods were delivered to Lithuania. this series of vaccines, currently unused, remained in 1932.

Among other things, the ABV5300 series vaccines have been delivered to 17 countries in the European Union. Luxembourg, Estonia, Greece, Austria and Lithuania have currently discontinued the use of this series of AstraZeneca vaccines.

The Ministry notes that Lithuania constantly monitors and analyzes all information on suspected adverse reactions to COVID-19 during large-scale vaccination around the world and is taking appropriate measures.

In mid-January, the vaccination process was briefly suspended due to the use of BioNTech and Pfizer, when SAM was informed of a potentially damaged cold chain during transport.

The vaccination process was resumed after receiving official approval from the Pfizer representative office in Lithuania regarding the possible further use of the vaccine.

In Latvia, the use of the vaccine has also been discontinued.

As a precautionary measure, the Latvian Health Inspectorate and the State Medicines Agency (ZVA) have suspended the use of a batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19, ZVA representative Dita Okmane told the news agency BNS.

According to the ZVA, so far no serious health problems have been reported as a result of this batch of vaccines.

On February 11, Latvia received 9.6 thousand. vaccine doses from this lot and most of them have already been used. 1,190 doses have not been used.

1.6 million ABV5300 batches were distributed to 17 members of the European Union: Lithuania, Estonia, Luxembourg, Latvia, Ireland, Denmark, Bulgaria, Austria, Greece, Sweden, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, France, Iceland, Malta and Cyprus.
