“Already today we can offer our customers a vaccination service in eight pharmacies and five cities: we vaccinate against tick-borne encephalitis and influenza. We really hope that this service is convenient and well received,” said Laimonas Devyžis, Chairman of the Board of Eurovaistinė, during the press conference.

According to him, the Ministry of Health (SAM) provides the opportunity to provide this service today, although e-health is not fully prepared for it.

“Yes, the Registry Center has not finished all the systems at this time and we have to go through the paperwork at this point, and then we will have to bring that data into the system when it starts up. But we think it is worth it,” he said.

The tick-borne encephalitis vaccine can be registered by phone or by physically visiting the pharmacy. If there is free time at that time, the vaccine can be given right away, or you can sign up for a later visit.

According to pharmacist Jovita Juodsnukytė, vaccination is performed by a pharmacist who has completed advanced practice pharmacist training.

Before vaccination, the patient is interviewed for 10 to 15 minutes.

The information collected on human health is evaluated and then it is decided whether a person can be vaccinated.

Changes needed for pharmacies took time due to workload

The BNS Registry Center (RC) reported that the eHealth integrations required by pharmacists are scheduled to be implemented later this month.

“Pharmacists licensed as advanced pharmacists in the eHealth system should have appropriate roles that allow them to enter data about the person who has come to them and the vaccine for them in the system. (…) These works of the program are finished by the end of March, and then people could be vaccinated against influenza or tick-borne encephalitis not only in polyclinics or private medical institutions, but also in pharmacies, ”said Mindaugas Samkus., a representative of the Registry Center.

According to him, these changes were delayed due to the Records Center workload related to other changes in eHealth.

Recently, the Registry Center has focused on various priority tasks related to the adaptation and improvement of the e-health system for the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the adaptation of the pre-registration of patients to the vaccination program, the supply of data, “said an RC spokesperson.

“For this reason, the development and implementation of the aforementioned functions of the electronic health system for pharmacists has been somewhat delayed,” he said.

The COVID-19 vaccine will not yet be administered

According to the pharmacy representatives, the population is already wondering if pharmacies can be vaccinated against the coronavirus, but such services will not be provided yet.

“For our part, we are truly committed to helping the public with the vaccination process. We are currently awaiting decisions from the Ministry (SAM – 15 minutes) to provide a list of requirements that we have to meet in order to provide that service, we are really very positive, ”said L. Devyžis.

According to him, the challenge at the moment is the vaccine shortage, discussions are underway, but there are no specific plans or dates when the population will be able to get vaccinated against COVID-19 in pharmacies.

“It just came to our notice then. The question of whether all vaccines can be vaccinated: 15 minutes), not all vaccines have the same requirements, and BioNTech / Pfizer is, of course, quite a demanding vaccine, “he said.

Aistė Šuksta, a representative of the Minister of Health, told BNS that such a possibility is currently being considered in preparation for mass vaccination.

“Various options are being considered, vaccination in pharmacies also during mass vaccination,” he said.

The only protection is vaccines.

According to pharmacists, it is currently appropriate to vaccinate against tick-borne encephalitis, because when the weather warms, the ticks are activated, but there is enough time for immunity to develop.

According to Dan Baksha, director of the National Public Health Laboratory (NSPL), tick-borne encephalitis kills many lives each year.

There is no specific treatment for this disease; vaccination remains the most effective tool.

“Immunity to tick-borne encephalitis requires three doses of the vaccine, which should be given at intervals of 1 to 3 and 5 to 12 months.

Vaccination should not be delayed during the summer, as it takes time for immunity to develop and the vaccine will not work right away. Therefore, specialists recommend starting to get vaccinated against this dangerous disease now and spend time in Lithuanian nature without stress, ”previously commented D. Bakša.
