V. Zemlys-Balevičius: we already have Italy, and in a week the health system may collapse

“Many people have already spoken about the images in supermarkets. I will not embarrass people, we are all aware and make our decisions. I can only comment on the current situation and who could anticipate it. Everyone watched in horror during the first quarantine what happened in Italy. In Italy, the incidence per 100k inhabitants was the highest with 800. We now have about 1200. The highest mortality rate was 17.6. More than 10 were followed for 60 days. Lithuania’s death rate, if we ignore that fig leaf, other deaths from covid19, is now 17.6 and has been above 10 for 20 days. If we cover it with a prospect, it is now 11.6. We already have Italy, and the epidemic is still accelerating ”, writes the scientist.

Everyone watched in horror during the first quarantine what happened in Italy. In Italy, the incidence per 100,000 inhabitants has risen to a maximum of 800. We now have about 1,200.

According to him, in fact, the situation is worse than what we see, because due to insufficient testing capacity, many cases are not recorded.

“The Alytus example shows that the situation is worse than it really is. There are stupid people in the municipality who decided that as many tests as possible were needed to try to catch all the sick. In the last two weeks, Alytus has been conducting 11,000 tests per 100,000 inhabitants, while the Lithuanian average is 5,800. Increased testing naturally captures more people, and now Alytus ranks first in terms of morbidity. Today the limit of 2,000 has been exceeded. It is possible to speculate that if we expand our testing capabilities, such morbidity would be throughout Lithuania, ”says V. Zemlys-Balevičius.

According to him, the number of patients in hospitals and deaths follows the number of cases.

“Even after the introduction of long-awaited measures, we will not see an improvement in the situation. The epidemic is so widespread that it will” generate “cases of inertia for at least a week. The health system still has some of this reserve of beds. , but it is designed for that weekly increase only. Po to – enough. Many doctors are already thinking about leaving work, so when that reserve runs out, we will probably have a total collapse of the healthcare system. Well, my grandparents went through the war, will be an opportunity to verify at least a part of what they have suffered in their fur “, writes the scientist.

He still believes in the conscience of the Lithuanian people and that most of them will adhere to the new restrictions and we will control the epidemic.

On Tuesday, the president will meet remotely with members of the Council of Health Experts, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonyte, Health Minister Arūnas Dulkis and members of the Seimas Health Committee and will continue to seek ways to manage the coronavirus pandemic.
