“We (the Ministry – BNS) will present a safe budget. What does insurance mean? It would be unsafe to talk about the increase in expenses that would travel for consumption,” said the minister in the Seimas Budget and Finance Committee on Wednesday.

“It just caught our eye then. If we start exceeding the Maastricht criteria, there is a good chance that the debt will start to grow exponentially in the future, I am talking about a few years later. Next year, 2021-2023, is especially important for the debt path, ”said V. Šapoka.

According to the minister, now to assess the consequences of the coronavirus crisis would be “divergence of coffee beans”.

Later, he told BNS that Lithuania still does not exceed the Maastricht debt criterion: public debt should reach almost 50% by the end of this year. GDP and the criterion is not more than 60%.

“If we start exceeding this indicator in a few years, it would be wrong,” said V. Šapoka.

According to him, no tax increase is planned next year, so far there are no proposals.

However, V. Šapoka does not rule out the possibility of increasing green taxes: “What may be related to green taxes could be earlier.”

According to the minister, now to assess the consequences of the coronavirus crisis would be “divergence of coffee beans”.
