Official unemployment reached a new record in early February: 16.4%.

According to the Employment Service, on February 1, 282,000 people were looking for work in the country. The registered unemployment rate increased 0.4% in January. This was mainly due to the normal slowdown in the labor market during the winter season.

According to the service, during the second quarantine period, the situation in the labor market remains more stable compared to the situation last spring.

Inga Balnanosienė, director of the Employment Service, affirms that the labor market is currently the most affected by seasonality, when the volume of activities in many sectors has decreased and there are fewer job offers, so the job search takes longer and it is more difficult to get a job.

“This is causing an increase in registered unemployment, but it is slower than in the spring.” Both agriculture and construction intensify the search for workers who often start the fight, ”said I. Balnanosienė in the report.

The service has been recording a decreasing number of registered customers for several months. In January, 20,600 job applicants applied, 6.5% less than in December and almost a third (31.8%) less than in January 2020.

Employers registered 20,700 job openings per month. Labor demand decreased 7.8% compared to December.

The demand for welders and construction managers was the one that grew the most. There has been a decline in job openings for construction workers: insulators, packers (by hand), plasterers, flooring and tilers, rack loaders, concrete mixers and concrete finishers.

There are enough openings on the market for heavy duty truck and truck drivers, loaders, cleaners, car and van drivers, advertising and marketing professionals, and painters.

This year, 19,300 job seekers were provided with employment, a quarter less than in December.

3,700 people began to work on their own after acquiring business licenses, 45.5% less than in December and almost 2.5 times less than in January of the previous year. According to the service, the lower number of people working with business licenses is due to stricter quarantine conditions and restrictions on many service activities.
