UN leader overseeing vaccination initiative sees unforgivable trend

“I am very concerned about the unfair distribution of vaccines between countries,” Guterres said in an interview broadcast Sunday on Canada’s CBC channel.

“It is in our common interest that all people in all regions get vaccinated as soon as possible. We must see the vaccine as a global good and universally available,” Guterres emphasized.

The head of the United Nations has criticized the selfish efforts of rich countries to stockpile vaccines that exceed the needs of their own populations.

“In the first place, do not accumulate vaccines, because it does not make sense to do so,” he said. “We are appealing to the more developed countries and requesting some of the vaccines that we have bought, since in many cases they are buying more than necessary.”

The Secretary-General regretted that disadvantaged countries using global COVAX access to the COVID-19 vaccine are finding it difficult to retain massive surpluses.

Mr. Guterres emphasized that the probability of stopping the pandemic depended on being able to vaccinate as much of the world’s population as possible. Appealing to the G20, which provided a mechanism, he urged that everything possible be done to make the global vaccination plan work.

When asked what he thought about the possibility of issuing vaccine passports, Guterres was not categorical. He noted that before making any decision, it is necessary to have a serious discussion and discuss how to ensure fairness and effective international cooperation.

“It just came to our knowledge then [pasus] will have and others will not. “It is not possible to allow more developed regions to move and not more developing regions,” he warned.
