The document says that Khalid Batarfi, the leader of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), who has led the group for less than a year, has been arrested and his right-hand man, Saad Atef al-Awlaqi, was killed during a “Operation in October in Gaida, Al Machra province”.

This report, presented to the Security Council by the UN Extremist Group Monitoring Team, is the first official confirmation that Kh. Batarfi is arrested. This was previously unofficially reported.

It is true that the document, which briefly describes the threats posed by jihadists in the world, does not reveal where the leader of Al-Qaeda is being held, or any further details about the October operation.

However, the SITE intelligence team emphasized that it had noticed “unconfirmed reports” that appeared in October that Kh. Batarfi was detained by Yemeni security forces and handed over to Saudi Arabia.
