The images of this burning sanctuary, which surrounded France and the world, immediately evoked memories of another tragedy when the Cathedral of Our Lady caught fire in Paris just over a year ago. Fortunately, this time the fire was not so furious and after a few hours the firefighters managed to put it out. They retained the roof of the cathedral, but no loss was made.
“The front windows have been destroyed, but the greatest damage has been done to the massive organ, which seems completely irreparable, and the platform on which they are located is very unstable and may collapse. We will also assess the damage that smoke has caused to works of art, ”said Fire Brigade Chief Ferlay Laurent.
As firefighters try to extinguish the flames and preserve the invaluable ecclesiastical heritage, Nantes speculates that a fire broke out in the cathedral.
“7:30 pm. The bells rang and I heard a sound coming from somewhere that reminded me of a short circuit. I paid no attention, but after ten minutes I saw a burning cathedral and rushed firefighters,” said the store owner. Jean-Yves Burban.
Still, French prosecutors have their own version and announce that the fire in the Gothic cathedral broke out by accident. Firefighters at the cathedral found up to three fires, so the main version was arson.
“We cannot ignore the fact that the fire broke out in three different locations, so we started an investigation into the arson.” However, no conclusions can be drawn yet due to the need for a thorough investigation, “said prosecutor Pierre Sennes.
This is not the first time that the Nantes Cathedral has been burned down. The last time it was on fire was almost half a century ago. Then the wooden roof of the sanctuary was completely burned.
