Traffic transformation is maturing on a busy highway – safety is the most important emphasis

There is a dangerous turn on the Kaunas-Karmėlava highway, where several traffic accidents occur. Locals have suggested installing speed limit signs on a small stretch, but road masters say there are plans to make major changes to make the intersection much safer.

Local complaint

Mikas, who lives in Margava, told the newspaper “Kauno diena” that traffic accidents happen very often when they turn to Margava. This not only puts people’s health and property at risk, but other drivers are forced to stand in traffic jams until the drivers involved discover and complete the necessary documents.

The man said that the biggest problem on the Kaunas-Karmėlava highway is turning left towards Margava, because it is necessary to pass the cars flying towards Kaunas at a considerable speed. On this road, many drivers also drive to the Karmėlava cemetery. There are no problems driving from Karmėlava to Margava. According to a local resident, if the speed limit were reduced from 70 to 50 km / h in a small section, most accidents could be avoided.

“I think it would be logical to limit the speed to 50 km / h from the Karmėlava side, about 100 m before the intersection. After all, it is normal practice to limit the speed before the intersection. There is no need to limit the speed when it is driven from Kaunas, because those who want to use Margava do so from a separate traffic lane, “Mikas told the newspaper.

The man claimed that, due to a dangerous turn towards Margava, he had repeatedly appealed to various authorities. No one agreed to slow down or take other steps to reduce the crash. According to the locals, there is definitely no shortage of car accidents here. There were also very painful disasters.

“I received a response with a map attached that the speedometers are installed nearby and will do nothing else. There have been several major accidents just before the New Year, but I can’t say how many of those minor accidents when people remain unscathed, but they really do happen. quite often. So I say it would at least be possible to slow down, “noted the reader of” Kauno diena. “

Accident statistics

Odeta Vaitkevičienė, a representative of the Kaunas County Chief Police Station (CEC), provided statistics on the number of accidents that occurred on that shift to Margava this year. According to officials, it would be logical to take additional measures in this section to ensure traffic safety.

“On the main Kaunas – Zarasai – Daugavpils highway (A6 highway), on the 10-11 kilometer stretch of the highway, in the period from 01.01.2018 to 05.31.2020, seven traffic accidents, four of them technical, were recorded in the police information system. On May 31, 2006, a traffic accident occurred, during which a person was injured “, – O.Vaitkevičienė pointed out the statistics of the accident.

Kauno diena wondered if the police would accept a proposal made by a local resident to reduce speed to 50 km / h on one side of the road at this intersection. Police officers seem to agree to such traffic changes.

“After an additional inspection for said section of the road, it is considered that an effective measure to reduce the speed of the vehicles would be the installation of traffic sign No. 329” 70 km / h “and, 150 m before the crossing with Margava, the installation of the additional traffic sign No. 329 “50 km / h. “In the near future, officials of the Road Police Board of the Kaunas County Chief Police Commissariat will present such a proposal to the Lithuanian Highway Administration under the Ministry of Transport and Communications,” the police representative transmitted the officials’ comments.

By reducing the speed limit from 70 to 50 km / h, most accidents could be avoided.

Waiting traffic changes

The mentioned path is supervised by the Lithuanian Highway Administration. Kauno diena also asked this institution questions about speed limits, but it turned out that there are much bigger changes to the plans.

“The Municipality of Kaunas District, in cooperation with the Highway Administration, is preparing a special plan to enter the territory of the Kaunas Free Economic Zone from the A6 highway. Evaldas Tamariūnas, Communications Manager, Division of International and Public Relations , Direction.

However, it is unclear when the construction of the new intersection will be implemented. In addition, management representatives did not respond if it would not be possible to temporarily slow down so that drivers could reduce the probability of accidents before major traffic reorganizations.
