Jolanta Jurkėnienė, a farmer from Anykščiai district who has been growing tomatoes for more than three decades, said that this year was favorable for vegetables. The tomatoes grew well and performed well not only in the greenhouse but also outdoors. She notes that tomatoes grown outdoors are tastier.
The woman, who acquired the specialty of agronomy at Aleksandras Stulginskis University (now VMU Agricultural Academy), said that she grows the varieties she likes and pays the most on the farm, and also tries new ones. J.Jurkėnienė stated that he liked the early Mondial tomato variety, which has a good and high quality harvest.
According to the interlocutor, the seeds of this variety are intended for professionals and are therefore sold in larger packages. “Mondial is disease resistant, ripe, a very tasty and above average fruit, suitable not only for salads, but also for processing and canning,” said Jolanta.
The farmer is fascinated by the Orange Slice orange fruit tomatoes, which ripen aromatic and fleshy tomatoes weighing more than 250g. She has been growing these tomatoes for many years. J.Jurkėniene was unable to obtain Orange Slice seeds in Lithuania. Therefore, the farmer was assisted by relatives living abroad.
I tried new varieties
This year J.Jurkėnienė also tested several new varieties. She didn’t resist the orange-yellow tomatoes. The small fruits, also called cherry tomatoes, Sungold, are very abundant. These delicious tomatoes are used to decorate sandwiches and skewers in one bite.
“Expectations were met with the orange bananas. Tomatoes are really very tasty and meaty, ”said the Anykščiai district farmer.
The darker tomatoes, with the lovely name Čiornyj bison, didn’t disappoint in taste either. However, their skin is very soft and tears quickly. Therefore, J.Jurkėnienė recommends using tomatoes of this variety for the production of sauces. Very tasty and fleshy tomatoes weighing 250-300 g: Gourmandia H. Harzfeuer F1 of medium size and others also taste good.
Proper care
A professional farmer who grows many delicious tomatoes, he noted that their quality depends on the variety. Therefore, it is often necessary to place 3-4 euros for 10 quality seeds. He emphasized that not only healthy and high-quality seedlings, but also their care is important for a rich harvest. J.Jurk favouritenienpenter gladly shared her experience in flower tomato care and cultivation.
“Because the leaves undergo photosynthesis and produce nutrients that feed the tomatoes above, it is necessary for the overgrown and flowering tomatoes to leave the leaves below to give the fruit enough strength to grow large and delicious.” said the farmer.
He added that greenhouse-grown tomatoes should be watered sparingly, abundantly, and around the roots. In very hot climates it is better to water 2-3 times a week.
Grows 80 varieties
Salvina Kievinienė, a farmer from the Panevėžys district, is also fascinated by tomato cultivation. She has been growing tomatoes for 14 years.
“I cannot resist the good varieties of tomatoes that are not only colorful but also exotic. So last year I grew 100 varieties of tomatoes in a seven acre greenhouse, this year 80. I replaced almost all the varieties grown last year with new ones. This is very interesting to me. It’s not just a job, it’s a hobby, “said Salvina.
His greenhouse combines hybrid and breeder tomatoes, tall, dwarf and medium. These are the well-paired Oxheart, expressive looking, like a narrow heart, raspberry rugby, and brightly colored Rozalina Rossa. Interesting and hollow tomatoes, suitable for meat fillings. Gargamel very beautiful, colorful, variegated black, resembling a plum, bright yellow, exotic taste, fertile: strawberry orange and others.
Held a celebration
This year S. Kievinienė had organized a tomato festival on his farm, where the tomatoes were not only inspected, but also tasted. Tomato history was recalled, tomato cultivation, its care, quarantine pests, world records, tomato dishes were discussed. The tomato lover was happy with the cultivated vegetables, which yield 150kg every other day! More than half a ton of multi-colored tomatoes are added to your farm in one week.
“I grow tomatoes, whose history is very interesting. While visiting the United States, I bought a tomato from an organic farm for $ 6 that had no name. I collected seeds from him and brought them home. These tomatoes with potato leaves on the farm go well in bunches, a tomato weighs 800-900 grams. I called it Pennsylvania, the same name as the state where she grew up, ”Salvina shared with her memories.
The farmer was satisfied with the good air circulation in the spacious greenhouse, as the sides of the greenhouse are rotated and pulled out. Thus, an outbreak of tomato diseases is avoided.
Common disease
Dr. Elena Survilienė, Principal Investigator, Plant Protection Laboratory, Institute of Horticulture, Lithuanian Center for Agricultural and Forest Sciences
Gardeners who grow tomatoes in greenhouses face a very common disease: tomato crown rot. It is caused by unfavorable conditions of plants grown in greenhouses: calcium deficiency, large fluctuations in soil and ambient temperature. When a fast-growing fruit does not receive the required amount of calcium, or for various reasons does not absorb it, a dry concave spot forms on the top of the fruit. Calcium deficiency occurs when there is a lack or excess of moisture in the soil.
Sometimes it is suggested to spray tomato leaves 3-4 times (weekly) with 0.2%. calcium chloride solution. These sprays can be helpful before and during stress, when heat and drought have set in. It would also be worth improving the quality of the soil and regulating irrigation.
