“Today at Seimas we are the support of the president,” he told News Radio on Friday.

According to R. Karbauskis, the opinions of the peasants and the president coincide on many issues.

As an example, he cited the Association Law, which was not supported by almost all members of the peasant faction, and Mr. Nausėda confirmed on Wednesday that he would not have signed it due to the almost uniform definition of marriage and partnership.

LVŽS has 32 representatives in the Seimas. This is the largest opposition faction.

R. Karbauskis also announced on Friday that the Lithuanian Union of Greens and Peasants plans to nominate its candidate during the next presidential elections, but would consider supporting the current head of the country if he needs support to participate in the elections.

“We will run in the presidential elections, we will have our candidate. If the current president needs the help of LVŽS, we would consider it,” said R. Karbauskis.

Nausėda told an annual press conference on Wednesday that the issue of her bid for the country’s term for a second term was too early and that the decision could be influenced by health plans and others.

G. Nausėda has been president since July 12, 2019, after defeating current Prime Minister Ingrid Šimonytė in the second round of the elections.

She replaced Dalia Grybauskaitė, who had worked for two terms.

The next presidential elections in Lithuania will be held in May 2024.
