This has not happened in Lithuania yet: the patient received a kidney transplant from a person with Covid-19

January 6 A dedicated organ donor was registered at the Klaipeda Marine Hospital. He was the first donor in 2021 to pose a particularly high number of questions to medical experts, having contracted the country’s COVID-19 virus just a month ago.

“This is an exceptional case in the entire history of organ donation. Doctors had to make a particularly wise decision because the organ donor had recently had COVID-19. This is a situation that is not described in any textbook, nor has it occurred in practice until now.

However, after evaluating the situation and the possibility of saving lives and carrying out all the necessary tests, both kidneys of the donor were used for transplantation, ”says Artūras Bagotyrius, Director of the National Transplant Office of the Ministry of Health, about the non-oral donor.

When evaluating kidney transplant options, doctors have a little more time before performing an organ transplant operation. As a result, this special situation was addressed by the best Lithuanian medical experts.

After lengthy discussions, surgeons at the Kaunas Clinics of the Health Sciences Hospital of the University of Lithuania decided to use the developed kidneys and transplant them to the waiting recipients. Likewise, the recipients who received the organs were informed about the situation and agreed to receive an extraordinary but crucial gift.

Yesterday, January 7, after all the examinations were carried out and the maximum safety of the recipients was guaranteed, the organs were transported from Klaipeda to Kaunas and transplanted.

Even during the declared COVID-19 pandemic, organ donation does not stop working, and the new organ donor case shows that the disease does not become an obstacle to saving other people’s lives.

Without a doubt, the best doctors in the field evaluate each case on a case-by-case basis and decide whether the organs may be suitable for the recipients. However, the most important role in this process is played by the organ donors themselves and their family members, who perform a noble act during the time of loss and give their consent to use the loved one’s organs for donation.

Any Lithuanian citizen who has reached the age of majority and has signed an agreement to receive a donor card can contribute to this process. It can be signed online: https://ntb.lt, in medical institutions, Eurovaistinė pharmacies.
