Motorhome owners estimate that the number of people willing to rent such a vehicle has increased several times this summer, and fall is waiting too. These forecasts are confirmed by a representative Spinter survey commissioned by the ferry operator DFDS: 1 in 7 Lithuanians, who have never traveled with a mobile home, are already planning such a holiday.
However, this way of traveling is still not common for many Lithuanians, so many questions often arise: who to prepare for and what is necessary to know?
1. Assess your needs
While at first glance it may seem that there is not much difference between passenger cars, caravans or caravans, each has its own advantages and disadvantages. It is true that it is important to know that a category B driver’s license is sufficient to drive the most popular models.
The car, which has space to sleep, allows you to reach everything you took on the trip quickly and conveniently. Also, it is often referred to as a safer and more convenient travel option. On the other hand, it may be more difficult to drive a vehicle of this type, due to its larger dimensions.
A caravan on wheels often seems to be a more flexible option. For example, you can leave the trailer at the campground, take trips to tourist spots by car only, and worry about possible engine failure. However, the transport of people on the trailer is strictly prohibited.

2. Rent or buy
“Most of those who tried to travel with motorhomes rented them, only a small part of those surveyed indicated that they had their own motorhome,” said Vaidas Klumbys, DFDS head of public relations and communication for the Baltic countries, citing the results of a survey. made in June.
This information does not surprise him: Lithuanians are only comfortable with traveling with campers, they fear that this way of traveling could be expensive or inconvenient, but after trying it, they feel the advantages and return to them.
Prices for caravans during the summer season start from 20 euros per day, for campers – from 60 euros for the same period. Most owners of these vehicles include discounts on cleaning and disinfection before and after the trip for longer rentals.
3. Bring what you need
It is true that traveling this way saves a lot not only because you don’t have to worry about accommodation, but also because of the additional vacation attributes. Perhaps the main argument for choosing this type of trip is the advantage that luggage can be carried whenever it fits. This is especially true when traveling with the family.
Almost all campers now have a mini kitchen and bathroom with a toilet, most of the necessary appliances run on gas or electricity. The spacious trunk holds not only medical supplies, clothing or food, but also camping supplies, outdoor furniture, fire pit or grill facilities, fishing poles, bicycles, and even paddles.

4. Think of a future route
Traveling on wheels will probably never be separate from spontaneity, but in this difficult time for all states, at least partially thinking about your route and knowing what to prepare for is very important.
For example, as of this week, self-isolation is mandatory for Lithuanians returning from Poland, Turkey or Cyprus, but it is possible to enter Lithuania without any restrictions from Germany, northern countries like Denmark, Norway or Finland, neighboring Latvia and Estonia.
Traveling with campers allows you to plan and change the route yourself, even after the start of the vacation, to stop and enjoy the views, new impressions and, after changing your mind, turn around and go home.
5. The journey is what you want it to be
“The global pandemic has taught us to seek and domesticate alternative ways of traveling. It has been transferred from airplanes to cars, because it not only allows you to enjoy the freedom, have the trip you want, but also gives you an additional sense of security. and comfort.
In other words, you can meet new places, but avoid meetings because you are “cut off” from the outside world. It is convenient to reach not only the closest countries by car; By combining several vehicles, for example a caravan with a ferry, you can find yourself in Germany overnight, ”recalled V. Klumbys.
Traveling in mobile homes also gives you the opportunity to travel “just with your loved ones” – family or friends, who may become the only tourists present for most of the vacation.
