We can accept more tourists, but we don’t want cars, says Neringa Mayor Darius Jasaitis, adding that entry to Nida itself may be restricted soon, if only a parking lot near Nida were to be installed soon, but there are plans for even more ambition. and ambition to prohibit the entrance to Neringa by car in general.
Register trash and limit water discharges
There is also no shortage of cars in Nida this summer. It is surprising not only the traffic flows, but also the abundance of tourists and their emissions. “Waste haulers cannot work due to increased flows, which were even difficult to predict,” said the mayor, adding that water consumption is much higher, with red lines already visible. – Consume water, but there is still enough water. In some wells there is already a red line, we are struggling to achieve the maximum water consumption capacity, but so far everything is going well ”.

The number of vacationers in Neringa is currently a record, but according to the mayor, there was never a shortage of vacationers at the time. Tourists are not put off by the entrance fee, which empties their wallets. “It just came to our knowledge then. We are not cheap to come, – said D. Jasaitis in the program” Are you serious? “- Only those who settle down come to us. Others can afford to come to the sea, where there are fewer people. “
The tables in the alley will be moved to a new location.
This year, tourists in Nida have to experience some inconvenience: the main street of Nida, which has a church and a municipality, is being renovated, and the legendary posters of the Nida festival with the handprints of famous artists are also erect in the nearby alley. . They are likely to be placed in a completely different location.
“The tiles will be placed next to the sculpture in memory of the master Vytautas Kernagis. I think those hands will continue to appear, although this year’s pandemic prevented the “Benai saigai Nida” festival. However, if the festival takes place and the number of participants increases, then the entire coast can be dedicated to the hands and it will be a new place of attraction ”, said D. Jasaitis. According to the mayor, the new placement of the tiles was coordinated with the relatives of the teacher V. Kernagis and with Arūnas Valinskas, author of the idea of the alley.
The mayor promised that in the fall the tables will be moved to a new location.

There will be fewer weddings due to ongoing repairs.
Nida’s church, which attracts many newlyweds, will be a bit empty this year, but it should make up for next year. “There are weddings, there just aren’t that many,” said the mayor, adding that the repair of Taikos Street is a stage this year. – Many came by boat, they kindly came to church, now they need to go to a repaired street. It can spoil the mood of young people and guests, so next year, when everything is in order, there will be as many weddings as there used to be. “
Sharing hopes for a more abundant summer, the mayor added that he is happy for everyone getting married in Neringa, and also happy that it complements the pockets of local entrepreneurs.
The streets will be repaired, but will the cars drive them?
The trimmer Neringa wants to take a break from the cars, so changes both near and far are already planned. The next change is an out of town parking lot, which can accommodate all guests’ cars.
“We have already discussed this idea in City Hall,” the mayor said of the car park. But that’s just the first idea. From the Klaipėda district to the Neringa settlements they dream of building electric train tracks. “An electric train could be visible on the poles, which would run at a height of 3-4 meters, the sea, the dunes, the forest”, described the dream of Mayor D. Jasaitis and emphasized that if such a train was installed, the entry to Nida by own car would be prohibited. – Traffic flows will inevitably increase, no matter how much we earn entry. We will not cover all of Neringa with asphalt, that is a fact, and the cars are the biggest devastator of our incredible corner. No man, people that we can accept even more, let them travel, but the vehicles, the cars, have something to change ”.

The mayor assures that the installation of such a train could be covered with funds from the European Union, adding that he considered other ideas, but they do not seem real. According to him, to replace cars with passenger buses to go from the ferry to Nida, it would take two minutes for the passenger bus to leave the ferry to cater for such a flow of tourists.
After hearing the question that the first thing to do is start with small jobs and fix a forgotten bike path that can take you from the ferry to Nida, the mayor reiterated that it is not the municipality but the laws that are to blame – hands tied while the law is in force.
“He blames the mayor, blames the management. We blame each other for making the trail messy. But this is a correction of a law. “It is not allowed to manage it by law,” said the mayor, referring to the bike path in the pine forest, which has long caused cyclists to be outraged by its poor condition.
If you ban fishing, you will have to forget about smoked fish
Nida’s face can change with a decision in Seimas’ room. “There is a law in the Seimas that we do not like, which can prohibit fishing in the Curonian lagoon, although it is our business card,” said D. Jasaitis about fishermen and smoked fish.
“I can’t imagine a Curonian steakhouse without smoked fish. I was born and saw a lot of fireplaces that I still see out the window. They smoked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Nida was in the smoked fish mist the entire time. Everyone remembers Neringa and Nida like this, “recalled D. Jasaitis.
The mayor added that he will endeavor to ensure that the amendments to the law are not adopted, although the amendments have already been submitted to the Seimas and approved, so discussions on fishing in the Curonian lagoon will continue into the fall session.
The mayor of Neringa also boasted of the conscience of the residents of his municipality when vaccinating “Are you serious?” Not only in Lithuania, but perhaps even in the world.
On the “Are you serious?” Show, the mayor also offered to accommodate illegal immigrants on one of the cruise ships, who are currently out of work.
