Officials from the Šilutė Division of the State Food and Veterinary Office (SFVS) collected dead birds and sent samples for analysis for avian influenza. They ask for feedback from people who know more about how to get rid of scabies in dead animals.

Chicken carcasses were collected, samples were taken and sent to the laboratory of the National Institute for Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment (NMVRVI) for avian influenza testing. Klaipeda swans d. avian influenza detected
The SFVS Šilutė Division informs the poultry farmers that on January 8. Investigations by NMVRVI revealed that the 4 dead mute swans found in Klaipėda and Raseiniai districts were infected with the H5 strain of avian influenza.
Upon further investigation, a highly pathogenic virus (H5N8 subtype) was detected in the carcasses of three birds. The case of this subtype of avian influenza has been confirmed for the first time in our country in a poultry farm, where 27 birds (chickens, turkeys, geese and ducks) are raised for their own needs.
“The risk of bird flu entering the Pomerania region is increasing,” said V. Jasaitis, director of the SFVS Šilutė branch.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza in poultry farms in 2020 established in 16 European countries. The largest outbreaks occurred in Hungary (273), Poland (51), France (35), Germany (29), and the United Kingdom (15). In other countries, isolated cases of this strain of avian influenza have been reported: 9 in the Netherlands, Bulgaria, and Ukraine, 3 in Slovakia, 2 in Denmark, Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Romania, and one in Belgium, Ireland, and Croatia.

In case of threat of bird flu, V. Jasaitis reminds poultry farmers that poultry can only be released in areas fenced off from all sides, which do not come into contact with natural or artificial bodies of water.
In addition, they should not be irrigated by surface water, bird waterers and forage should be kept indoors or in poultry houses so that they are inaccessible to wild birds, which are the main vectors of the virus.
