The demand for nurses has consistently outpaced supply in recent years, but that changed last year. As unemployment increased, so did the number of unemployed nurses: 1,163 were registered (668 in 2019). Meanwhile, the number of job offers for them dropped from 789 (2019) to 676.

During the first quarter of this year, 229 unemployed nursing specialists registered with the Employment Service. 233 jobs were available to them, and 17 junior nursing professionals also sought employment. 4 job offers were registered for them.

“However, long-term trends do not change. We note the aging and shortage of nursing staff: almost half (46%) of registered nurses with the Employment Service are over 50 years old. Among applicants of employment of a younger nurse specialist, up to 21 percent. He is over 50. Unfavorable long-term trends are forming in the number of specialists, “explained Gytis Darulis, deputy director of the Employment Service.

According to him, the need for nursing professionals is stimulated by the large emigration of nursing professionals, the workload and unsatisfactory pay balance of employees, the aging of the population and the constant growth in the need for active care and Nursing.

Demand for work of nurses

In the last five years, the Employment Service has registered an average of 775 vacancies for nurses and 38 for younger nurses each year.

2016-2019 the number of registered vacancies per year was higher than that of job seekers. More than three-quarters of job openings for nurse specialists have been registered in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda counties in the last five years.

Last year, in Vilnius County, a third (37%) of job openings were for nurses and a quarter (26%) for young nurses. In Kaunas and Klaipėda counties, they accounted for a fifth (23% and 20%, respectively), and the youngest nurse specialists 32%. and 26 percent. The largest number of vacancies was presented by the Center for Integrated Health Services (Panevėžys), Elijos Vėjarožė (Vilnius), Energetikas (Palanga).

This year, more job offers were registered in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and Marijampolė counties than those seeking the position. Energetikas, the Prison Hospital and the Kaunas Hospital of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences were looking for the largest number of employees. Most of the vacancies are in Vilnius, Klaipeda and Kaunas.

Need in the municipalities

Currently, there are 34 vacancies for nursing assistants in Vilnius. UAB Addere submitted up to 30 job offers. Nursing assistants are needed for the National Blood Center, the Social Care Home for the Elderly, the Antakalnis Polyclinic and the Center for Integrated Health Services.

This year, 29 medical and care institutions in Kaunas were understaffed: almost 60 job offers were presented to nurses, nursing assistants and other social workers. Employers ask training providers to refer nurse assistants-in-training to internships. Care and treatment institutions, non-governmental organizations request help to provide volunteers. Young people are invited to volunteer and this information is shared with other social partners who work with young people. Volunteer opportunities are presented to the unemployed in Kaunas Hospitals of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences.

Alytus County S. Kudirka Hospital needs 5 employees: Nursing Assistants and a General Practice Nurse, Alytus District Municipal Primary Health Care Center, 2 General Practice Nurses.

At Druskininkai Hospital, Druskininkai Nursing and Care Home, vacancies were offered to nursing assistants, a general practice nurse. Addere Care nursing home submitted up to 10 job openings for nursing assistants, but no one wants to travel from Druskininkai to work in Trakai.

Vacancies were registered for 9 nursing assistants in the Varėna ward at the Addere nursing home (workplace in Trakai). Medisanitas plans to hire an auxiliary nurse.

Marijampolė Hospital, Marijampolė County Women’s Activity Center, Giedruma LT, Švč. Mary’s Nursing Home, Alpha Center, Kalvarija Social Care Home, etc. Wanted job seekers assistants (6) and 10 social workers (10).

In Klaipėda and Panevėžys counties, the need for staff in nursing and treatment institutions is not recorded, the situation is relatively stable and is not as tense as at the end of last year due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The Energetikas health center, which offers more jobs for nurses in the Klaipėda region this year, will participate in the virtual event of the Employment Service “Career in Lithuania”, where it is expected to find the necessary employees.

How many nurses have returned to the job market?

This year 103 nurse specialists and 10 junior nurse specialists were hired through the Employment Service. 2020 331 nurses (85% with permanent contracts) and 21 young nurses returned to the labor market.

The Employment Service’s annual Employment Opportunity Barometer, based on the opinion of labor market experts, predicts higher-than-average employment rates for nursing professionals.
