High workload does not cause burnout

According to the psychotherapist Eugenijus Laurinaitis, who will be at the LOGIN festival, which will take place from September 24 to 25. In Vilnius, the rapporteur, three groups of symptoms testify to the fact that the employee was burned.

“In the first place, a person feels emotionally exhausted, he no longer has the energy to do what was important to him before, interesting, meaningful,” begins the specialist’s story.

The second characteristic that E. Laurinaitis names is that he no longer sees meaning in what he does: “A person stops valuing his work as something that provides him with satisfaction and existential value. The burned person begins to feel that he is doing things that do not bring him the results that led him to that job. This is especially evident in medicine and pedagogy ”.

The interlocutor adds that burnout is accompanied by the feeling that a person is a poor specialist: perhaps others pay and work better, do better, and the person who feels that way is a loser. This translates into a decrease in satisfaction with the results of their work.

“At first, people burn out because they try to work as hard as they can, they want to do the work that others have not done. It is an effort to work better, and even more. When the final stage of exhaustion arrives, people tend to see that not everything is as expected when they went to work ”, explains E. Laurinaitis.

According to the specialist, the employee does not burn out due to too much workload, because the person “puts” the burden on himself. Burnout occurs due to excessive ambition to do what is normally impossible to do.

Suggest to follow an old oriental proverb

Speaking about work and burnout at work, E. Laurinaitis also draws attention to what determines a person’s job satisfaction and dissatisfaction with work.

“When there are challenges at work, but they are overcome and the employee finds creative solutions, then the job” transports “him,” explains the psychotherapist.

The opposite feelings include when a person sees that effort and results do not lead to something good. Efforts are thwarted by the systems themselves, like medicine. It is quite obvious that most doctors choose a profession to work better than those in which they have been admitted. But the system itself is such that it disrupts the wishes of the doctors, in which case they are overwhelmed, ”says the interlocutor.

Is it possible to prevent burnout at work? “One of the simple but very difficult things is to tell yourself that it is impossible to do it. There is an old Eastern proverb: Lord, give me the strength to do what I can, give me the mind not to do what I cannot and give me the wisdom to separate us ”, is the formula given by E. Laurinaitis.

According to the psychotherapist, the beginning of all problems is associated with ambitions that are greater than opportunities.

Fatigue and exhaustion are not the same

What to do if you notice a burned person nearby? E. Laurinatis shares the recommendations.

“You can see it very clearly from the side when a person is burned, although you can say ‘I’ll try a little more, work harder and everything will be fine.’ Those who want to help such a person should understand that it is good to tell him that they see him exhausted, but only a few measures can be taken for him in some cases. The Mental Protection Law establishes that this can be done when a person is dangerous to their health, life or well-being due to a mental disorder ”, says the specialist.

According to the interlocutor, when depression has the greatest weight compared to burnout, there is a very high risk of suicide. If relatives and co-workers begin to hear such speeches, it is necessary to call psychiatrists, and then specialists will decide how to help this person.

According to E. Laurinaitis, exhaustion is not fatigue: “Fatigue is a physiological condition that arises after rest. Burnout is a state of fatigue that is sick and needs to be treated ”.

What awaits a person after healing from burnout? “Once a person is released from exhaustion, she can continue living, but whether or not she burns again depends on whether she has changed internally or if there has been a psychological change in her that allows us to appreciate what is said in my eastern orientation . proverb ”, explains the psychotherapist.

Psychotherapist E. Laurinaitis will read his presentation on the topic “Is it possible to take off from Phoenix?” At the LOGIN conference on September 25 at 11:15 am at the “Curios Minds Powered by BTA Insurance” event.
