A woman who visited Kaunas “Akropolis” clothing stores last week said she was surprised by the image she saw. Through the mirrors of the measuring booths, she claimed to have seen reflections on the film cameras. Meanwhile, store representatives unanimously claim that no one is looking at customers, otherwise it would be an international scandal.

Felt uncomfortable

“I went to the New Yorker store on the Acropolis on Thursday because I was looking for female paraphernalia, I needed a bra. I chose a path and went to try it on. When I turned on my bra and looked in the mirror to see how it looked, if it fit me or not, and I saw a video surveillance camera reflected on the ceiling in the mirror, I was in a slight shock. I felt uncomfortable “, – Daniela de Kaunas opened.

According to the woman, said video surveillance camera was not hung above the measuring booth, but further away, in the lobby of the store. However, although she does not directly film the person in the measurement booth because she separates the door, Kaunas’s wife guesses: if she sees the video surveillance camera reflected in the mirror, the person in the measurement booth is likely visible in the image captured by the camera.

In this case, it would be better to destroy the measuring booths and measure the clothes in the aisle of the store. So at least I would know that only the people who will be visiting here at the time will be looking at me.

I went to different stores

Fostering curiosity, Daniela said that she visited the store the next day to make sure she saw a reflection of the film camera in all the mirrors in the measuring booths, who knows, maybe not the next booth. Thought. “I took a sports blazer to the measurement booth, I put it on the mirror and I saw the same image as the first time, the mirror reflected the camera,” said the interlocutor.

That’s not the end of the woman’s investigation – she decided to go to the nearby Bershka store. Picking up a sweater, she stepped into the measuring booth and looked around. “If I look to the side of the door, I cannot see the camera, but if I look in the mirror, I can see the camera as perfectly as possible. Here it is attached to the ventilation opening,” Daniela explained.

He questioned the need for measurement booths.

When Kaunas got home, he considered that this arrangement of video surveillance cameras in stores was probably not accidental. Possibly, it was chosen so that thieves could detect it more easily.

“Okay, if you only measure outerwear, but how, for example, do you try on a bra without undressing? So who needs metering booths if they are controlled? In this case, it would be better to destroy them and measure the clothes in the aisle of the store. Then, at least, I would know that only the people who would be visiting here at that time would be watching me. ” measurement or not?

Did you react too sensitively?

When journalists from the portal contacted the representatives of the first store visited by the Kaunas woman, they assured that the measuring booths are definitely not being filmed.

“There is a scandal throughout the European Union. Filming in metering booths would be a violation of human rights, a violation of the law. I think the woman reacted too sensitively. 99 percent guarantee that they don’t really see anything there.” said a New Yorker spokeswoman.

The interlocutor said that customers were monitored by video cameras in the store with a special sticker at the entrance, but, it was repeated again, people were not really monitored in the measuring booths.

Provided an explanation

Tadas Marčiukaitis, representative of the Apranga Group, who also reported on issues related to Bershka stores, assured that video surveillance in these stores is carried out in strict compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (BDAR) and to guarantee the security of the employees and customers and property.

“Cabin changers are not filmed or otherwise monitored in any store. The photo you sent is not the camera, but the adjustment lever of the ventilation lever.” Apranga Group respects the privacy of its customers and guarantees that video surveillance in all stores is carried out in accordance with the law and the rules of the State Data Protection Inspectorate, “said T. Marčiukaitis, adding a photo confirming the adjustment lever of the ventilation tube that he mentioned.

For her part, Brigita Levenauskienė, manager of Kaunas Akropolis, emphasized that although the tenants themselves are responsible for the installation of the cameras in the stores and the processing of the data collected by them, they all have a strict requirement to install only those solutions of technological surveillance that guarantee respect for customer privacy and personal data. safety and comply with all legal requirements in force in the country.

Individual privacy must be respected

Raminta Sinkevičiūtė-Šečkuvienė, advisor to the Legal Department of the State Data Protection Inspectorate, interviewed T. Marčiukaitis and said that the BDAR requirements apply to the processing of video data, ensuring that:

People’s privacy must be respected, so filming should not take place in living rooms, basic kitchens and, especially, in areas that require absolute privacy: bathrooms, changing rooms and the like.

– Video surveillance should only be carried out for legal and defined purposes, for example, video surveillance can be used for the protection of property and people;

– Video surveillance cameras are installed in such a way that video surveillance is carried out only in necessary places;

– The videos should only be accessed by a person authorized by the employer who needs such access to perform their functions;

– The video retention period would be set according to the purpose of video surveillance. The video retention period must be specified. It is important to note that storage times should not be determined by the technical capacity of the video recorder.

According to her, video surveillance must be communicated: employees must be informed about video surveillance by signature or in another way that proves the information. And other people are informed about video surveillance by presenting the information on the information panel before entering the video surveillance area.

“It is especially important to pay attention to private spaces when conducting video surveillance. People’s privacy must be respected, so it is not possible to film in recreation areas, basic kitchens and especially in areas that require absolute privacy: bathrooms, changing rooms, etc. ”Emphasized R. Sinkevičiūtė-Šečkuvienė.
