On Thursday, in response to the morbidity situation of COVID-19 in the department of nursing and supportive care of the Varėna Hospital, a meeting of the Emergency Operations Center of the Municipality of the District of Varėna was convened, announces the District Municipality of Varėna.

Agnė Visalgaitė, head of the Varėna branch of the National Center for Public Health, provided information that based on Thursday’s data, there are 172 COVID-19 diseases in the Varėna district (10 new ones were confirmed Thursday). 83 people are considered recovered.

The largest coronavirus foci were recorded in Var Hospitalna Hospital, Varėna PSPC Merkinė Nursing and Supportive Care Hospital and Varėna Regional Unit of the State Forest Enterprise. According to the presenter, the chimneys are expanding and the situation is getting complicated. The municipal doctor said that the number of patients does not reflect the real situation, since there are many asymptomatic cases.

At the meeting, it was decided that in an emergency, if all staff members fall ill, the forces of the Varėna Social Services Center will be used.

Algirdas Miklyčius, director of the Varėna Hospital, reported that COVID-19 had been detected in 16 of the 25 patients in the Nursing and Supportive Care Unit. 16 staff members have been isolated and temporary staff from other departments are now being created. Employees are expected to return to work next Monday or Tuesday. According to the hospital director, no new patients will be admitted to this unit for at least the next two weeks. Nor is it possible to migrate staff from one department to another. At the meeting, it was decided that in an emergency, if all staff members fell ill, the forces of the Varėna Social Services Center would be used.

Danas Bortkevičius, Director of Varėna PSPC, provided data on 3,745 COVID-19 tests carried out, 210 of which were carried out at the mobile station. In total, 6 Var dena PSPC employees suffer from coronavirus, another 7 employees suffer from other diseases. Of Merkinė’s 34 patients, 2 are ill. Answers to other patient tests are expected, after which the situation can change dramatically. In isolation, there is 1 staff member and 4 patients who have been in contact with the sick.

The head of the social support department was satisfied that the situation in the care institutions is stable. 2 people are in self-isolation. One of them is an employee of the Merkinė care home, the other – of community child care homes.

The head of the education department briefly examined the situation in the progymnasium “Rytas” in Varėna, where 2 students, 2 teachers and 2 other teachers are currently in isolation. The situation is expected to be brought under control and the virus will not spread.

Since the quarantine runs until December 17, further extension of distance education for students in grades 5-12 is being considered. Only 3 district schools (Valkininkai, Panočiai and Žilinai) use a mixed educational method.

Saulius Dabravolskas, head of the Activities Department of the Varėna District Police Commissariat, reported that the situation in the police remains stable, 2 officers are ill and 1 officer is in isolation. 3-4 crews work during the day, from 24 hours. – 2 crews. According to the chief, no pre-trial investigations have been initiated, a total of 16 people have been inspected to verify compliance with self-isolation rules and no violations have been identified. There were also 7 reports of possible non-compliance with the self-isolation rules, but these were not confirmed.
