In a two-page letter to the Taliban, Col. Sonny Leggett, a spokesman for the US forces in Afghanistan, said “all parties” must remain restricted to prevent further bloodshed.
“If violence is not reduced, then yes, you will receive a response,” Leggett wrote in a letter to Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.
“All countries must return to the political path <...> “Afghans should sit down and start talking together about the future of Afghanistan,” said Leggett.
The letter was issued after General Scott Miller, who led US and NATO troops in Afghanistan, warned the Taliban on April 28 of the possible consequences of continued violence.
Under the terms of the agreement between the United States and the Taliban signed on February 29, the Taliban promised to stop attacking US and foreign partners and to start peace talks with the Kabul administration after the exchange of prisoners.
For their part, the United States and other countries have pledged to withdraw troops from Afghanistan within 14 months of signing the agreement.
The United States agreed not to attack the Taliban, but reserves the right to attack to support Afghan forces if they are attacked.
According to Leggetto, the Taliban also promised to reduce violence by 80 percent. and stop attacks on urban areas. Instead, according to Legetto, the violence “increased dramatically.”
Although the Taliban did not attack coalition forces and cities, it has returned to the battlefield since the agreement was signed and has carried out an average of 55 attacks a day against Afghan forces, Afghan officials say.
Meanwhile, the prisoner exchange has stalled as the Afghan government has questioned the release of hard-line Taliban members who could return to combat.
In a brief response to Leggett’s letter, Zabihullah Mujahide accused the United States of making “provocative statements”.
“We are committed to our goals, with respect for our own commitments,” Zabihullah Mujahide wrote on Twitter.
United States President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he wants to repatriate US troops, so the Taliban understand that as long as they do not attack US or foreign forces, they will not face the consequences of further attacks, experts say.
