The United Kingdom (UK) government is drafting new legislation to allow the main part of the EU withdrawal agreement to be ignored. EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier says the Brexit conditions under which the UK formally agreed to join the European Union must be respected.

Updated with comments from EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier.

Legislation currently being drafted in the UK provides for and requires customs controls on goods traveling between Great Britain and Ireland. Labor has criticized the plan, and the government says it is cautious should a trade deal be negotiated.

According to the BBC, Boris Johnson, the UK prime minister, should announce later that if a trade deal is not reached by October 15, both sides should move forward.

The prime minister told EU partners that the UK’s withdrawal from the bloc without a trade deal would still be a good result.

Everything that has been agreed must be respected, France Inter told Barnier in response to a statement that Johnson wanted to review the agreements on the provision of state aid in Northern Ireland.

Barnier said he would discuss the report with his British colleague David Frost during the week of negotiations on future trade relations, writes AP-BNS.

What matters to me is what the Prime Minister says and does, and what the British Government itself says and does, he added.

Regarding Ireland, Ms Barnier stated that she would continue to apply the EU single market rules to avoid a hard border with Ireland under the accession agreement.

The aim was to prevent a resumption of interreligious tensions between Ireland and Northern Ireland, which was largely quelled by the 1998 Good Friday Peace Agreement.

The absence of a land border since the end of the conflict is a prerequisite for peace … And it is a prerequisite for a united and connected economy for the entire island, Barnier said.

A new round of talks between the UK and the EU began on Tuesday, with the aim of agreeing that the EU and the UK could trade duty-free and under customs control.

On Monday, UK chief negotiator David Frost said the UK had no intention of compromising its principled ability to control its bets.

We are not going to make a provision that allows them to control our money or how we can organize things here in the UK, Mr Frost said.

V recalls that the UK officially withdrew from the EU on January 31. From that date, a transitional period entered into force, during which trade relations between the UK and the EU did not change for some time, but after the transitional period is over, the UK and the EU must trade under the new business rules.

After Brexit, the EU and the United Kingdom sought to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland, a territory of the United Kingdom and Ireland, a member of the EU, at any cost, and it was decided that customs controls would be carried out between Great Britain and North Ireland.

So far, no progress has been made on future trade relations between the UK and the EU.

Negotiations stalled on several issues, including so-called equal treatment provisions, state aid and housing standards.

If Brexit were to take place without an agreement, most trade would be governed by the rules and customs of the World Trade Organization.
