At the end of the stage, the experienced Lithuanian collapsed and due to the injuries he sustained, he was unable to continue the race. Ignat was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he was being examined.
7.7 km before the finish, two cyclists collapsed in the main group against I. Konovalov. The champion of our country, to avoid a collision, braked abruptly and soon turned his head, flew into the ditch, and his bike flew about 10 meters. Several rivals boiled over the lying Lithuanian cyclist. In all, several dozen cyclists fell into the collapse.
The first stage of the 197.8 km was won by French world champion Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick Step) – 4 pm 39 min. 5 sec. (average speed – 42.525 km / h). The riders who occupied 8-21 places were 8 seconds behind. Australian Michael Matthews finished second (BikeExchange) and Slovenian Primož Rogličius finished third (Jumbo-Visma).
The race was started by 184 riders from 23 teams.
Konovalov, 35, started the Tour de France for the third time. He also participated in these contests in 2010 and 2017.
