Second place goes to the author of the project “Willkommen” arch. Arnoldas Gabrėnas, the third, to the developers of the project “Parallels” MB “Pupa-Strateginė urbanistika” and UAB “3SET”.
“The project creates a dynamic developing public space, using simple means for its formation, which are unique in each segment and take into account the context. At the same time, the project connects both sides of the street, creating a cohesive urban core with new added value, which is enjoyable and convenient for everyone at any time, “stated the evaluation commission in the tender report.
According to the commission, the drawing of the sky proposed by the authors, which marks the historical urban structure 26/11, forms zones that adapt to various different functions: the arrangement of cafes, green areas, recreational spaces. Such a solution provides opportunities for improvisation, does not unify the space of the street, creates conditions to create a unique character of each individual street element, a separate section, formed by the functions of historical facades, vegetation and street space.
“This is how the authors consciously create the possibility of various scenarios in the street space. Quiet traffic on the new side of the street allows for a more cohesive street space, but also poses challenges for pedestrian safety. The project contemplates the location of the bicycle lane on the historic pavement, which is exceptionally uncomfortable for cycling. It is recommended that cyclists be moved to the new part of the street, where they could move in the general traffic flow, “the report said.
In the Commission’s opinion, the authors of the project have not yet been able to find the optimal proportion of street vegetation and hard surfaces. Although the authors declare the concept of a street plaza, in the further development of the project it is necessary to increase the area and diversity of the street vegetation at the expense of hard surfaces, to select various scenarios to overcome this vegetation.
15 minutes remember that after announcing the ideas of the Vilnius Vokiečių International Street Architecture Competition, on social networks boiled the cauldron of discussion. Both politicians and philosophers spoke about the work of the participants. City officials say they don’t want to replicate the success of other popular streets in the capital, but to create a new public place. It is true that experts emphasize that some of the work does not withstand criticism, comments are available for the task of the competition itself.
