In August last year, the body of a 50-year-old Kaunas resident brutally stabbed with a knife was found in one of the apartment buildings in the Šilainiai district. It was discovered by the missing relatives of a man, and when they opened the apartment door, they found a body awash in blood. Experts have found that a knife hits a person nearly five dozen times.
Forensic investigators found that a closed-minded killer was regularly visited by his friend. Finally, his identity was established, which is associated with the gang of “Doctors” under the nickname of A. Smailis, the shooter of the shadow world.
After gathering evidence that Smailys may have killed his friend, officials decided to arrest the main suspect. During the search, he and his family were surprised by the police officers, and even the deminers in Aro had to be called for help.
Kaunas Arsenal: pistol, handcuffs, cassette and grenades
On the morning of October 13 last year, when police officers visited the home of E. Smailis’ mother-in-law who lived in Kaunas, Kaunas residents suspected of murdering objects found there were overwhelmed by additional inconvenience.
In an apartment owned by his wife’s mother, officers found a 9mm Makarov combat pistol with an erased identification number, two clamps for it, and 64 ammunition for this weapon.
Also found were 5 F-1 grenades, an RG-42 grenade, 6 grenade detonators, as well as handcuffs and a cassette.
In the past, E. Smailys – Smailiukas has not even tried to deny that this entire arsenal belongs to him 6 times for property extortion while acting in an organized group, robbery, self-control and other crimes.
Especially since both his wife and his mother only found out about the pistol, ammunition and grenades found in his house by the police who found these items.
He believed that he had found the legacy of his infamous father A. Smailis in Kaunas.
E. Smailys said that he had acquired all of these assets after the death of his father, A. Smailis, a shooter from the shadow world of Kaunas.
The son mentioned that in 2017, after his father’s death, he went home on the border with Poland. While looking through it, he found a bag in the farm building that contained grenades, ammunition, and a pistol. After inspecting this find in detail, he put the bag in the car and took it to Kaunas, and hid it in the storage room of his apartment.
“Here I looked in detail at the contents of the bag, I saw grenades, a cassette, handcuffs, a pistol, ammunition,
but I didn’t count them. At some point he had bought other wives from a taxi driver. I inspected everything, put all the items found in a computer bag and left them in the warehouse.

2020 August. I decided to go to the farm in Dzūkija and throw the gun, ammunition, grenades, cassette and handcuffs there, but as I was driving through Kaunas, things came up and I kept them with my mother in the apartment, in the second room behind the furniture.
The mother-in-law once lived with the disabled spouse in the apartment. The latter had gone to the farm with my wife and son at the time, and I made the key to the apartment in 2019 by copying it from the key my wife had. I did not intend to use the weapons found, ammunition, explosives, they were neither necessary nor useful, I wanted to throw them somewhere in the swamp, ”said E. Smailys.
The sentence was reduced by a third.
Mr. Smail was charged under two articles of the Penal Code: illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and high explosives, as well as illegal acquisition of a weapon other than firearms.
As the defendant did not contest the charges against him, pleaded guilty and regretted it, it was decided to try his case in court under an abbreviated examination of the evidence. And this allows the penalty to be reduced by a third.
“The defendant E. Smailys acted directly with intent, that is, illegally, without permission to acquire and possess firearms, ammunition, high explosives, not firearms, he realized the danger of his actions and wanted to act accordingly way, “Kaunas said. District Court of Pastuolis.
Likewise, he stressed that no aggravating factors have been identified for the defendant E. Smailis and that the mitigating factor is that he confessed to having committed the acts provided for in the criminal law and sincerely regretted it.

Although the son of the ruler of the shadow world of Kaunas, E. Smailys, has been tried and arrested several times in the past, now all his convictions have disappeared, making the person formally illegal. Still, past sins, according to the court, characterize him negatively.
“In assessing the personality of the defendant E. Smailis and the nature of the crime and misdemeanor, there is no reason to see that the objectives of the punishment will be achieved without his actual execution,” the court said.
Mr. Smail was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison, with a reduction of one third, as the case was dealt with in a summary examination of the evidence, with a final sentence of 3 years in prison.
He’s already been tried for murder
E. Smailys is currently on trial in another case for the murder committed in the fall of 2020 in Kaunas, Šilainiai district. This is not the first case in which the son of a character from the shadow world of Kaunas has been charged with murder.
In 2005, in Kaunas, in the Girstupis stream near Popieriaus Street, the body of a half-naked young man was found shot in the forehead with his hands tied with electrical tape.
It was soon established that 25-year-old Robert Maroz had lived in the train station area with a disabled mother and had been convicted several times in the past. It was suspected that the murder could have been carried out elsewhere and the body was carried away and thrown into a stream.
During the investigation of this crime, E. Smailys was convicted three times and his uncle Rimantas Smailys was convicted twice. It was found that both knew the murdered, lived in the neighborhood.
In addition, Smailiukas and R. Maroz looted. In 2002, along with other accomplices, they broke into the apartment of a Kaunas resident, beat the host, and seized a mobile phone, shampoo, toothpaste, shower gel, and other small items. R. Maroz was soon arrested, his accomplice E. Smailys had been hiding from the police for some time.
Law enforcement officials said at the time that young Peak, following in his famous father’s footsteps, was leading a assembled “maximum brigade” and that his neighbor R. Maroz may have been one of his strikers.
E. Smailys together with his uncle R. Smailis were tried for this crime, but evidence was lacking to prove their guilt.
