“Although the cold season lasted a long time, was exceptionally cold and consumed a lot of heat, the price of the heat itself barely exceeded 4 euros per kilowatt-hour and was the lowest in a decade,” says the city’s deputy mayor from Vilnius, Valdas Benkunskas.

The heating season in the capital usually ends in April, last year the heat supply was interrupted on April 24, and in the last five years, the heating was turned off on May 4 at the latest, so this year it is a record year for capital.

Heating in apartment buildings and administrative buildings is normally turned off when the daily average temperature is at least 10 ° C for at least three consecutive days. The decision about the end of the season is made by the Vilnius City Municipality. However, apartment building residents themselves can bring forward or delay the end of the heating season in their home. In the general education and preschool establishments where the activities take place, and in the personal health establishments, the heating season is terminated at the discretion of those responsible for the establishments as required.

“Customers, including multi-apartment residential buildings, may choose the end date of the heating season at their own discretion, in accordance with established hygiene standards. If more than half of the apartment building’s residents are According to the decision to advance or delay the heating cut-off, the supervisor of the heating and domestic hot water system can close the valves of the heating substations and cut off the heating or vice versa – expand that. The community president, the The house or apartment building manager should only inform Vilnius Heat Networks about the decision made, ”says Laurynas Jakubauskas, customer service manager at AB Vilniaus šilumos tinklai, which manages a third of the entire Lithuanian heat economy.

Although the fall was quite warm and the heating started later than last year, the winter was much colder. This is shown by the differences in the mean temperature. For example, the average temperature in January this year was -4.1 ° C and in February -5.9 ° C. Meanwhile, last year, the average temperature in January in the same months was positive. The average daily temperature in February this year was almost six times lower than last year and reached -18.5 ° C.

During the heating season (October 15, 2020 to April 29, 2021), AB Vilniaus šilumos tinklai (VŠT) supplied approximately 2.4 TWh of thermal energy to the grids. The coldest day of this heating season, compared to the average day of the heating season, demanded up to 74 percent. more energy used to produce heat.
However, this winter residents enjoyed lower heating prices and paid less in December: 3.96 ct / kWh.

Before the end of the heating season, the specialists from AB Vilniaus šilumos tinklai have already started the first preparations for the next season: hydraulic tests are underway, which will intensify after switching off the heating. Oil pipelines and other modernization works will also be carried out. All of this will allow the company to supply heat to residents’ homes more efficiently and reliably.

The Vilnius City Municipality also recalls that spring and summer are the most appropriate times for multi-apartment communities and management companies to undertake the renovation of buildings and internal heating systems. According to Deputy Mayor V. Benkunskas, an orderly or modernized heating system significantly reduces the cost of heating services during the cold season. It is estimated that, in most cases, the heating rates in a new or renovated apartment building of 60 m2. m area of the apartment, compared to an apartment of similar area in an old apartment building, is almost 2 times smaller.
